Challenge the Pundits – Gameweek 1 FPL Tips – Fantasy Premier League Tips

This week FINALLY see’s the start of the 2015/2016 Premier League season and what better way to celebrate this than with a competition? This week both FPL Updates and FPL Avids are going to be locking horns, going head to head in a competition and you can compete against us too! The competition itself will be a one week competition, running from Saturday through to Monday. Think you’re better than the pundits? Well why not come join us (here)!

The competition is kindly being hosted by the brilliant Premier Punt website – if you haven’t heard about them before, be sure to check them out and even follow them on Twitter. We have asked them to set us up an FPL Updates vs FPL Avids league, which yourselves can join. The league itself is £2 to enter with the prize being split out between the top players. The amount of players will decide on the size of the split (split can be found on the site here), but then again that doesn’t matter as we will win anyway!

In order to join the league, you need to follow some simple steps:

  1. Log-in or register on the Premier Punt website
  2. Once logged in, choose “Barclays Premier League – Game Week 1”
  3. Pick the team you think will beat us…
  4. Join the challenge “Challenge the Pundits – FPL Updates & FPL Avids”

So here is our team:

So let’s kick things off, in goal we have big Tim Howard. The Everton keeper is up against Premier League new boys Watford and although Watford will want to get off to a good start in their return to the Premier League, we can only really see one outcome here. Everton will want to show that last season was a blip and what better way to do so than kicking off with a win against Watford.

We have a back three, as we start; Hutton, Ward and Huth. Here we didn’t want to spend too much of the budget, but at the same time give them a good chance at keeping a clean sheet. The 3 defenders play; Bournemouth, Norwich and Sunderland respectively, which isn’t too bad at all!

In the middle of the park we have a flat 5, leaving just 2 strikers up top. To kick things off we have Sinclair who comes up against Bournemouth, just one week after grabbing a pre-season hat trick so can he do it again? We then have Fabregas, and whilst everyone looks to Hazard, we are hoping the Spaniard steals the show. Our third midfielder is the new Liverpool captain, Henderson, who sees his team face off against Stoke City. Liverpool’s last game of the season last year saw them get taken apart by the Potters, but surely they won’t do this again? Mahrez and Redmond also feature, as both have shown some good pre-season form, which hopefully they will carry into the season.

Finally up top we start a partnership of Lukaku and Pelle. Although the big Belgian has picked up a knock, we expect him to recover in time and he could go to town against the new boys, Watford. Pelle on the other hand has really shown some good pre-season form, grabbing 6 goals!

So onto @FPLAvids’s team:

In goal I’ve gone for Petr Cech. In Premier Punt there isn’t too much of a difference in price between the premium options and cheaper ones so I might as well play it safe with Cech at home to West Ham who are struggling with pre-season form.

In defence I’ve gone for Azpilicueta. No queries here; the cheapest option that’s nailed on in the Chelsea back line, understandable pick. Huth and Patrick van Aanholt complete my defence. It’s a bit of a strange strategy I’m deploying but my feeling is that because they are playing against each other, I don’t think this game will be overloaded with goals and thus at least one of them will pick up a clean sheet.

In midfield I’ve gone for Fabregas and Payet. Fabregas has got history of coming out of the blocks fast at the beginning of the season so I reckon he’ll bag an assist against Swansea. Payet is another creator and despite the Hammers poor form he still has the potential to perform well. Completing the midfield is Henderson and Hoolahan. Henderson, the new Liverpool captain, is a consistant performer who’ll be looking to show Stoke that last season’s 6-1 defeat was a complete one-off. Hoolahan is a pick I’m not overly keen on. I simply just couldn’t afford his teammate Nathan Redmond.

Up top I’ve gone for £50m man Sterling, who’s listed as a forward in the Premier Punt format. Away to the Hawthorns on Monday night football, I reckon he’ll look to hit the ground running in the absence of teammate Sergio Aguero who is recuperating after the Copa America. Two Premier League newcomers complete my team on Premier Punt’s Weekly Fantasy Football. Depay, who’s criminally underpriced at 7.5m, and Callum Wilson. Both cheap with good fixtures so not much more to say.
