FPL Dilemma – Townsend vs Redmond – Fantasy Football Tips

Another day, another FPL Dilemma. This time it’s 2 English wingers who have changed clubs in the transfer window looking to move onto better things. Both players performances and pedigree last season earned moves up the ladder of Premier League food chain.

So who comes out on top in this FPL Dilemma?

Andros Townsend (6.5m)

I’ve previously asked myself whether or not if Andros Townsend played on the left wing he’d repeatedly drop his shoulder and run into the crowd? But that was during his time at Spurs, since then he’s improved drastically. Taking a step down in clubs benefited his career. He went from a bit part player to Newcastle’s star man. He’ll be looking to for fill the same roll at Crystal Palace but with Bolasie and Zaha also operating on the flanks will he be guaranteed gametime? Let’s wait and see.

I wouldn’t look into his stats from last season too much either, with 4 goals an 2 assists, he virtually didn’t kick a ball for half a season. Townsend was Newcastle’s bright spark under Benetiz but his efforts alone weren’t enough for them to avoid the drop. This season if he nails down a starting spot over Zaha he will prove good value. With the likes of the players previously mentioned plus a striker surely coming into the club (Berahino has been rumoured) Andros will prove a pivotal part in Palace’s season if they’re to secure a top half finish.

Nathan Redmond. (6.0m)

Slightly cheaper than Townsend but still a viable option. At first glance, similar to Townsend, his stats don’t look that impressive. When you look at his minutes played he only featured in 68.4% of the season, scoring 6 goals and assisting 4. Perhaps his previous manager Alex Neil thought he had to nurture his talent and not burn him out. Comparing Norwich’s squad to Southampton it looks similar minutes could be the case again for Redmond. Yes, he’s been brought in to fill the void of the departing Sadio Mane, but with the array of attacking talent Southampton have I can see a similar rotation policy being in place. On the bright side it looks like he’ll have one less competitor to be worried about. Shane Long who was often deployed out wide last season will be the main man up top for the Saints after the departure of Pelle to China.

Who to pick?

This FPL Dilemma is a tough one. For me both have viable fixtures at the start of the season. Redmond’s Southampton have Watford, Sunderland and Swansea all at home in Gameweeks 1, 3 & 5 while Townsend has West Brom, Bournemouth, Middlesborough and Stoke in the first 5 weeks.

Why not pick both? They’re cheap enough it’s not such a big gamble. If either of them isn’t performing there is plenty of other options for a similar price. If you do go for them both it would a allow 2 premium strikers and midfielders comfortably. At the early period of the season it’s all about budgeting. Having these 2 mid priced options would allow a lot of big points grabbers. A strategy that certainty should be considered.
