Chelsea would have the opportunity to secure a fantastic title win as they travelled to West Brom on Friday night. They would also face Watford at Stamford Bridge on Monday, with the Hornets looking likely for another season of mid-table. There was also a massive announcement regarding the future of manager Walter Mazzari.

Anyway, here’s the FPL Updates gameweek 37 review…

FPL Gameweek 37 Review

Goalkeeper

Sergio Romero – Manchester United would have an eventful week, as they first secured a place in the Europa league final after a nervy second leg draw with Celta Vigo at Old Trafford. They would then travel to North London to face Spurs, with both sides seeming to take their foot off the gas somewhat. They would suffer a 2-1 loss in this match on Sunday, however they would face another tough test at St. Mary’s, as Southampton put out a strong side against the Red Devils. The best chance of the match would arrive early on when Manolo Gabbiadini was presented with a superb chance from the spot, however his low effort was brilliantly saved by stand-in goalkeeper Sergio Romero. With the prospects of a looming European final, Mourinho was clearly keen to retain some fresh legs in the final weeks of the season.

Defenders

Cesar Azpilicueta – Chelsea would be the first side to play this gameweek, and knew a win would secure a league title under Antonio Conte in the Italian’s first season at Stamford Bridge. However, West Brom weren’t taking it lying down, and tested the Blues resolve. Late on the match looked to be slipping from the Blues’ grasp, but late on substitute Michy Batshuayi would stab home a late winner past Ben Foster to send the fans into pandemonium and spark wild scenes in the away end. They would then face Watford, making a number of changes in the process, and what looked to be an easy game at 3-1 up quickly sparked into life when Watford levelled. However, a strong finish from Cesc Fabregas late on would take all three points to make a great week for Conte’s side.

Kyle Naughton – Swansea took a monumental step towards survival on Saturday, as they ran out 2-0 victors away at Sunderland, just days after David Moyes’ relegated side had done the Swans a massive favour by defeating relegation rivals Hull City at the KCOM stadium. The Swans would make the best possible start when after ten minutes Gylfi Sigurdsson would cross for Fernando Llorente to convert. The former Juventus and Bilbao man has scored some vital goal this season, and none more so than this one. They would double their lead on half-time when a thunderbolt from Kyle Naughton flew past Jordan Pickford. Swansea would hold and await Hull City’s match at Crystal Palace on Sunday. Palace won the match to confirm the Swans’ safety and Hull’s relegation.

Hector Bellerin – Arsenal full-back Hector Bellerin has had somewhat a difficult season as Arsenal struggle towards a potential top four finish. Two wins in a week mean it will go down to the final match as they chase Liverpool and Manchester City. City now lie just three points ahead of the Gunners, with Liverpool even closer in fourth position, just one point above Arsene Wenger’s side. However, Bellerin was in fine form this week as Arsenal collected a vital six points. Much has been made regarding the future of manager Arsene Wenger, and it seems that his side may just come up short in the pursuit of Champions League football.

Midfielders

Alexis Sanchez & Mesut Ozil – First up, Arsenal faced a trip to the Bet365 stadium, and ran out comfortable winners on a good afternoon for the Gunners. Goals from Mesut Ozil and Olivier Giroud gave Arsene Wenger’s side a 2-0 lead, before Peter Crouch pegged them back with twenty minutes remaining. However, Arsenal would not be put off by this minor setback, and would score two more goals, firstly through Alexis Sanchez in the seventy-fifth minute, before Olivier Giroud sealed a brace and a great afternoon for his side with a fourth ten minutes from time. Arsene Wenger praised his side’s adoption of a new three at the back system that they’ve been playing over the past couple of months.

Heung-Min Son – Spurs also recorded two victories over the past week, however they would be largely in vein as Chelsea sealed the Premier League title before Mauricio Pochettino’s side had even had a chance to play. This leaves the White Hart Lane club set for another second placed finish, although they will take heart from the past two seasons’ efforts. One of the driving forces behind this season’s successes has been none other than Heung-Min Son, who has really adapted to the English game in his second season since his arrival from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2015. After a disappointing opening campaign, where he struggled to sustain a place, Pochettino has spoken of his delight at the South Korea international’s form.

Philippe Coutinho – Liverpool look to be set for a top four finish after a campaign that may have began promising a bit more. Under Jurgen Klopp they’ve been dominant against those around them, with their pressing and urgent style often giving them the edge against sides who like to dominate the ball. They made light work of a West Ham side that never really posed a threat on Sunday afternoon. Daniel Sturridge opened the scoring when Philippe Coutinho picked him out, before he rounded the keeper and slotted home. Coutinho would then score a quickfire brace himself around the hour mark, before Divock Origi finished the match with fifteen minutes remaining. It was a great result for the reads, who look strong as they head into their final match.

Forwards

Harry Kane – Harry Kane enjoyed a week to remember as his exploits seem to have taken the golden boot from the hands of Romelu Lukaku. He netted once against Manchester United on Sunday, as he flicked home the second goal, which would turn out to be decisive, as Wayne Rooney pulled a goal back with fifteen minutes remaining. Skip forward five days, and the England international netted a stunning four goals, and assisted one as his Spurs side ran out 6-1 winners away at mid-table Leicester City. Heung-Min Son netted the other two goals, while also assisting one of Kane’s goals. They would celebrate the final game at White Hart Lane after their victory over Man United, while celebrating some of the greatest players to grace the turf.

Gabriel Jesus – Manchester City would face Leicester City in the early kick-off on Saturday, and would play out a dramatic match at the Etihad, where Pep Guardiola’s side may well have gone home knowing they got away with one. After goals from David Silva and Gabriel Jesus (penalty), City looked to be cruising. However, an acrobatic effort from Shinji Okazaki would cut the deficit. Riyad Mahrez then spurned the best chance when he saw his spot kick rebound off his standing foot and into the net, only to be disallowed by the referee. City would then face West Brom, where goals from Gabriel Jesus, Kevin De Bruyne and Yaya Toure left City knowing a point on the final day away at Watford will seal a top four finish.

Olivier Giroud – Arsenal’s second game of the week would be a home match against already-relegated Sunderland, and it would be yet another comfortable performance, which would yield a precious three points for the North-London side. Despite their dominance throughout the ninety minutes, Sunderland held firm at the back and looked to be headed for an unlikely shutout. However, Alexis Sanchez broke the deadlock when he tapped home from Mesut Ozil’s square cross into the penalty box. He would score again just ten minutes later when he scrambled in Olivier Giroud’s cross to seal the three points. It was noted that the Emirates appeared rather empty on the night, however the Gunners will know that nothing less than a win will be enough to secure a top four finish.
