Antonio Rüdiger – Fantasy Football Potential

The departure of club captain and legend can be quite hard for any team, even be it the champions themselves. The task gets even harder when a replacement is needed to be found in one transfer window, but Chelsea have managed to do this with the signing of Antonio Rüdiger.

Chelsea have acquired the services of Antonio Rüdiger from Roma for £34 million on a 5 year deal. Can the German fill the big shoes of John Terry though? The tough tackler will be eager to prove himself in the Premier League.

Fantasy Football Potential

The 24 year old Rüdiger played 26 times in Serie A during 2016/17 season, starting 25 matches. He assisted twice, playing a total of 2,204 minutes. He made an impressive 1105 passes, with a pass success rate of 83%. He also completed 16 dribbles, with a 70% success rate.
Rüdiger tackled 33 times (1.7 per game) during the season, with 73% success rate and also made 27 interceptions.

He won 1.7 aerial duels per game, making at least 3 clearances per game and made 0.3 outfield blocks per game. Rüdiger has some disciplinary issues though, as he was awarded 7 yellow cards and 1 red card last season. He was also responsible for 1.7 fouls committed per game.

Rüdiger plays primarily as a centre back, though he can also be deployed as a right back. Considering Chelsea manager Conte is likely to continue with his 3 at the back approach, Rudiger may play more often, along with David Luiz and Cesar Azpilicueta. With Gary Cahill on the wrong side of 30, a younger option may be favoured more over the old legs.

Priced at 6.0m, it may be prudent to wait a few gameweeks before getting Rüdiger into the team, as Fantasy Premier League managers should scout and see whom Conte prefers in his back three.
