Huddersfield Town have continued their preparations for there first ever season in the English top flight by signing free agent Danny Williams on a 2-year deal. Williams faced his new club while at Reading last season in the Play-Off final at Wembley.
Manager David Wagner has commented on his new midfielder, Danny Williams:
“As our fans will have seen during the Play-Off Final, Danny brings a lot of quality to any team he plays for. His way of playing – his aggressiveness, tenacity and athleticism – fits our ‘Terriers Identity’ perfectly. It is not usual that a player of Danny’s ability is available on a free transfer, so there was understandably a lot of interest from clubs.
“When we spoke, it was clear that he wants to prove himself at the highest level in England and that he had a real desire to come and play for Huddersfield Town. He is a terrific character and will totally fit in with our group.
Fantasy Premier League Potential
Williams played for Reading in the 2016/17 season and was a key player for them, which adds to the surprise of him being placed on the free transfer list. Last season saw him make 39 appearances for the club in the Championship, with 34 of them being in the starting XI. Primarily as a central defensive midfielder, he knows his role well. At 28 years of age I can certainly see him in the starting XI for the Terriers.
In the 2016/17 season, Williams managed to get on the score sheet 4 times while also bagging 1 assist, which is a decent return for a defensive minded midfielder. That said, his versatility in the middle of the park has seen him pushed further up the pitch on occasions in positions such as the central attacking midfielder and even as a right midfielder, whilst maintaining a passing percentage of 86% throughout the season.
Price wise Williams at 5.0m may be a decent player to have on a bench in Fantasy Premier League. However, primarily as a defensive midfielder, it will question the ability for points unless he continues to score a few goals. With competition coming from new signings Aaron Mooy, Kasey Palmer and Tom Ince for attacking roles, it could see him starting comfortably deeper on the pitch.
Huddersfield opening fixtures are as follows: Crystal Palace (A), Newcastle United (H), Southampton (H), West Ham (A) and Leicester City (H).
