FPL Dilemma – Ozil vs De Bruyne – Fantasy Football Tips

In this FPL Dilemma we compare some of top creators in football. These are Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil and Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne. To get a premium midfielder who will consistently provide points from both assists and goals is crucial and these are both capable of doing just that.

Without further ado, let’s consider the underlying statistics for this FPL Dilemma…

Mesut Ozil

Mesut Ozil has made a total of 116 appearances and contributed with 23 goals with 42 assists across 4 seasons at the Emirates stadium. Since the 2013/14 debut season for Ozil he has been consistent with his goal scoring. The 2013/14 season saw 5 goals, 2014/15 4 goals, 2015/16 6 goals and 2016/17 8 goals. With a few goals each season and the most recent season his best goal tally yet, will he continue to improve?

Assists wise in 2013/14 season he managed 9 assists and 5 assists in 2014/15 after being side lined with an injury for part of the season. The 2015/16 season was his best so far with an astonishing 19 assists in 35 appearances! Although not as many as the 2015/16 season, 9 assists in the most recent 2016/17 season along with his most goals in a single season made him a quality FPL purchase.

With the addition of Alexandre Lacazette as the main forward for Arsenal I think Ozil will improve on his 9 assists in 2016/17 with a true finisher latching onto those through balls. Priced at 9.5m Ozil could well be worth the buy if he improves his game.

Kevin De Bruyne

Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne is one the must have players in FPL managers squads for this upcoming season in my opinion. At 10.0m he could be an absolute coup as one of the most promising attacking midfielders.

De Bruyne first featured for Chelsea in 2013/14 making 3 appearances, but failed to leave an impression and transferred away from the club. Manchester City brought him back to the Premier League for the 2015/16 season in which he made 36 appearances scoring 6 goals and 9 assists. In the most recent 2016/17 season he scored 6 goals again, but this time almost reached Ozil’s tally of 19 assists with 18!

At 26 years of age Kevin De Bruyne could feature in FPL teams for years to come if he stays in the Premier League.

The Verdict

Both Ozil and De Bruyne are in my most influential midfielders for FPL, along with the likes Alexis Sanchez, Eden Hazard and David Silva.

With City’s first 3 game weeks being against Brighton (A), Everton (H) and Bournemouth (A) I can certainly see De Bruyne grabbing a few assists and possibly on the score sheet himself. For Arsenal they play Leicester (H), Stoke (A) and Liverpool (A). Both teams have quite even fixtures with 2/3 away.

However, Arsenal also play a week before (06/08/2017) in the FA Community Shield and will be interesting to see if Arsene Wenger plays Ozil as it could affect his starting position for game week 1 (11/08/2017).

My winner is Kevin De Bruyne. For the sheer reason I think he’s best attacking midfielder in the Premier League and looks to consistently play well and improve. With the opening fixture against Brighton it wouldn’t surprise me for him to be one of the top points scorers in gameweek 1. In my opinion 10.0m is a steal. However, I’m keeping a close eye on Mesut Ozil as he always pulls points out of the bag throughout a season.
