Fantasy Football Potential – Greg Cunningham

Cardiff have signed Preston defender Greg Cunningham for an undisclosed fee believed to be around £4 million. The Irish left back has played in and around the Football League for a few years now and has finally got his big move to England’s top flight.

Cunningham has played four games for the Ireland senior team but his last appearance for them came back in 2013. He had more success in the youth ranks playing 28 times over a variety of levels, scoring four goals in the process. He has won one piece of silverware in his career, coming with Bristol City in the 2014/15 season where they came out victors in the Football League Trophy.

Speaking about his new signing, manager Neil Warnock said:

“It’s fair to say that I’ve been an admirer of Greg for a number of years and that he’s consistently been one of the best left-sided defenders for club and country.”

Fantasy Premier League Potential (4.5m)

Cunningham has actually had previous Premier League experience with Manchester City a long time ago and I suspect this is why they have added him a month or so after his signing. He apparently played just three minutes across two games for City in the 2009/10 season.

This year he has been priced at £4.5m which is a fair price but I don’t see many people selecting him as there are many better options. His team mate and fellow full back Lee Peltier is cheaper than him at £4.0m so he is clearly not a very intriguing option.

Cardiff’s first five fixtures are as follows: Bournemouth (A), Newcastle (H), Huddersfield (A), Arsenal (H) and Chelsea (A). The first three games could see a couple of clean sheets for Cardiff and Cunningham but it does get a lot harder into September so Cardiff players like Cunningham will likely be of less use then.
