FPL Dilemma – Robertson vs Trippier – Fantasy Football Tips

A good fullback can provide a club with an additional attacking threat – creating goals and assists outside of their main attacking line. Two of the better attacking fullbacks in the premier league are Andrew Robertson (Liverpool) and Kieran Trippier (Tottenham Hotspur), both of which are available for £6.0 m in the FPL this season, but which should you turn your attention towards before the deadline on Friday?

Here’s our view on this FPL Dilemma…

Kieran Trippier (Tottenham, £6.0)

After Kyle Walker’s departure from Spurs to Man City last summer, there were big shoes to fill at Tottenham in that right back position. The two players in main competition for this spot were Serge Aurier and Kieran Trippier.

The pair were often rotated last season, but it’s Trippier who played the most minutes picking up 7 assists, 9 clean sheets, and a total of 113 points. He averaged 5.3 points per game – certainly not shabby. His performances were good enough to have him selected as first choice right back in Gareth Southgate’s England side where he really proved himself on the global stage. Trippier put in a series of excellent performances for England, providing excellent crosses and set pieces – including his memorable free kick against Croatia.

Trippier will be looking to carry on his fine world cup form into the new season, which could make him a very viable option – especially with Spurs also favouring a 5-man defence as he played in with England, however he potentially may not be fit at the start of the season, having made it so far into the world cup, leaving Aurier a chance to take his position.

Andrew Robertson (Liverpool, £6.0)

Liverpool had been struggling in previous seasons to fix a leaky defence and left back was no exception to this. Having previously been relying on a defensively weak Alberto Moreno, and makeshift fullback James Milner, there was certainly room for somebody to make the position their own.

It became evident fairly quickly last season that Andrew Robertson was the person for the job, proving himself as a real all-round defender. He started 22 league games last season picking up 1 goal and 5 assists, picking up 111 points – 2 fewer than Trippier. He averaged 5.1 points per game, again lower than Trippier’s 5.3, but not by much.

Robertson this season will aim to keep performing and solidify his position in the team. As he has established himself as first choice, he is likely to start many more league games. As Scotland played no part in the world cup he is also far more likely to start the opening fixtures.

The Verdict

Both players provide an excellent attacking threat for their clubs, but in terms of which you should select for the start of the season, I would personally choose Andrew Robertson. Although Trippier had the better season for FPL managers last season, his lack of fitness combined with Tottenham’s tougher opening fixtures compared to Liverpool leaves Robertson as the better option in my opinion. Later in the season however, managers may want to look at switching to Trippier as Tottenham’s fixtures improve!
