Gameweek 5 Review – FPL Tips – Fantasy Premier League Tips

Gameweek 5 saw a return to action for Premier League clubs after the first international break of the new season, and the first for Gareth Southgate’s World Cup heroes. It was kicked off in style with Liverpool making the long trip South to face Spurs at Wembley for Saturdays lunchtime kick-off. Chelsea hosted early strugglers Cardiff City as they looked to hit top spot in the Premier League, while Arsenal travelled to Newcastle. Sunday would see Wolves host Burnley while West Ham faced Everton, before Monday saw a South coast derby between Southampton and Brighton. Anyway, here’s the FPL Updates Gameweek 5 Review…

Gameweek 5 Review

Goalkeeper

Ederson – Manchester City hosted Fulham at Eastlands knowing that, as they often are, were expected to record a comfortable victory. They didn’t disappoint, and in truth the three goals they managed could have been a whole lot more. They opened the scoring through Leroy Sané as he tapped home from a teasing left-wing cross. This came after two minutes, and by the 20th they were two in front as David Silva finished on the half volley. The result was made certain when Raheem Sterling netted shortly after half time to keep City’s unbeaten start going.

Defenders

Matt Doherty – Newly-promoted Wolverhampton Wanderers recorded their first home win of the Premier League season as they picked up a 1-0 win over Burnley on Sunday afternoon. However, to say the score line reflected the match would be unfair, as Wolves recorded over 30 efforts on goal. The only goal of the game came when marauding full-back Matt Doherty pulled the ball back to Mexico international Raul Jimenez, who slotted the ball in off the post for a tidy finish. The homes side had several chances to kill the game off but will be pleased to get more points on the board.

Shane Duffy – Brighton travelled to Southampton for somewhat of a South coast derby on Monday night. In a game that was low on quality Pierre Hojbjerg netted a stunner from range to give the Saints the lead headed into the break. With the game poised at 1-0 to Mark Hughes’ side, a poorly timed challenge from Gaetan Bong presented Danny Ings with the chance to double the lead from the spot, and he duly obliged, slotting into the corner at Mat Ryan tried to stay on his feet. You could have been forgiven for thinking the game was over…

Chris Smalling – Manchester United have had a hard time this season, as has manager José Mourinho, having faced a lot of criticism over results against Brighton and Spurs in recent weeks. However, they became the first side to beat Watford this season, as they ran out 2-1 winners at Vicarage Road. Romelu Lukaku continued his form as he turned in from close range, before Chris Smalling fired in a superb half-volley from close range. Andre Gray slotted into the top corner late on to make things nervy, but United clung on to give them a second consecutive league win on the road.

Midfielders

Eden Hazard – Chelsea hosted newly-promoted strugglers Cardiff City at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon, but didn’t have things all their own way. The Bluebirds flew out the blocks and went in front when Sol Bamba stabbed home from close range. However, Chelsea’s talisman Eden Hazard had something to say about that, as he netted an excellent hat-trick to turn the game and bring the score to 3-1. He would receive a standing ovation at full-time but not before Willian scored the goal of the game, bending home from long-range to secure a 4-1 win for Mauricio Sarri’s side.

Ryan Fraser – One man who has impressed in previous seasons for AFC Bournemouth has been little Scotsman Ryan Fraser. He was in superb form at the weekend as he netted a first-half brace against Leicester, first curling beyond Kasper Schmeichel into the far corner, before slotting under the Dane not long after. His side would find themselves 4-0 up through goals from Josh King and Adam Smith, after a red card for Foxes captain Wes Morgan. Late goals from James Maddison and Marc Albrighton proved to be consolation as Claude Puel’s side went down 4-2.

Andriy Yarmolenko – Ukrainian international Andriy Yarmolenko has found first team minutes hard to come by since he made the move to the London Stadium from Borussia Dortmund in summer, however he was handed his first Premier League start for the Hammers as they travelled to an injury-hit Everton. It’s fair to say he hit the ground running as he slotted in past Jordan Pickford after just eleven minutes in. He wasn’t done there though, after Pickford’s kick dropped short, Yarmolenko cut inside past one before whipping an unstoppable effort into the far corner to make it 2-0.
David Silva – Manchester City are yet to be beaten in the Premier League this season, however much of the attention seems to have been turned to rivals Liverpool this season, with many seeing them as Pep Guardiola’s only realistic title rivals. City begin their Champions League campaign on Wednesday as they host Lyon at the Etihad. This may be where City are looking to kick on, after they were dumped out last season by Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side. Many believe that City can certainly go close under Pep, with their superb squad depth and talent.

Pierre Hojbjerg – At 2-0 up in what was a scrappy game, many a Saints fan may have thought they were going to cruise to victory against Brighton on Monday night. However, not long after scoring their second, the Seagulls began to mount some pressure, and pulled a goal back as Shane Duffy headed home from a superb Anthony Knockaert delivery. You could feel the nerves around St. Mary’s after that, and they were right to be concerned, as James Ward-Prowse hauled Duffy down in the box, which gave Glenn Murray the chance to equalise from the spot, and he did so coolly to leave Mark Hughes wondering what might have been.

Forwards

Marko Arnautovic – West Ham found themselves 2-0 up at Everton, and although it was Yarmolenko who scored both it was the work of Marko Arnautovic that made the opener. He played a neat one-two before unselfishly squaring to the Ukrainian who made no mistake. Hammers fans may have thought it would be the same old story as Gylfi Sigurdsson netted on half time to pull one back. However, Arnautovic would have the final say as he stabbed past Jordan Pickford from Pedro Obiang’s pass to end the game as a contest.

Joshua King – AFC Bournemouth, alongside Watford, are the league’s surprise package so far as the Cherries find themselves with ten points from their opening five matches and were on top form as they dispatched Leicester 4-2 at Dean Court. A star of previous seasons, Joshua King netted from the spot to record a third for Eddie Howe’s side, and the Norway star’s influence cannot be overestimated as he leads the line superbly alongside Callum Wilson. Ultimately, Bournemouth would most likely be happy with survival, and are some way towards doing so after such a strong start.
