Euro 2016 Preview – Iceland – Fantasy Football Tips

Iceland’s qualification for Euro 2016 will mark their first ever appearance at an international tournament, so it will be fresh experience for the entire squad. That’s not to say however that their players should be overlooked for the fantasy football this summer. Let’s delve into what Iceland have to offer in terms of fantasy football!

Defence

Ragnar Sigurdsson will be a crucial component of the Icelandic backline. The centre-back plays his club football for Krasnodar in Russia, but can also chip in with the odd goal just as he did in qualifying. Although they conceded just six goals in the qualification process, Iceland do struggle for high profile talent in defence, so picking any of their goalkeepers or defenders may be risky.

Midfield

Most certainly the star man in the squad is Swansea City’s Gylfi Sigurdsson. Arguably an unsung hero in this season’s Premier League, he scored 11 goals in 33 games from midfield in an average side. His record for the national team is extremely similar, with 12 goals in 37 matches in an Iceland shirt, with six of those coming in qualifying. He has demonstrated why he should be among the contenders for a place in your fantasy teams and he could well be a differential, with many people choosing to overlook the debutant’s squad. Aron Gunnarsson, another player who plays in Wales, did his reputation no harm with two goals in Cardiff City’s Championship campaign too.

Forwards

Having beaten the Czech Republic, Holland and Turkey in the process of getting into the competition, Iceland certainly know how to find the back of the net. Perhaps the most nostalgic name of all to be going to the Euros is former Chelsea and Barcelona centre forward Eidur Gudjohnsen. He will be on the plane to France in spite of retiring from international duty last year. Kolbeinn Sigborsson also has a decent record for his country, scoring 19 goals in 37 games, but his club form at Nantes has not been glittering.
