Euro 2016 Preview – Romania – Fantasy Football Tips

Romania will be a tough side to break down, having qualified for Euro 2016 without losing a game. 66-year-old manager Anghel Iordanescu is currently enjoying his third spell in charge of the Eastern Europeans and they will fancy their chances in a group where 2nd place is definitely achievable. Here’s what to expect from them.

Defence

Having conceded just two goals in the entire qualification campaign, Romania are heavily reliant on their backline being on the top of their game. Fiorentina goalkeeper Ciprian Tatarusanu is likely to start ahead of Watford’s Costel Pantilimon due to the latter’s lack of playing time, so the Serie A shot-stopper would be a decent reserve goalkeeper to have in your squad. Ex-Hammer Razvan Rat brings mass experience, with over 100 caps, but the best defender is former Tottenham centre-back Vlad Chiriches, who will captain the side this summer.

Midfield

Stuttgart midfielder Alexandru Maxim can be a classy creative player on his day, but inconsistencies have led to his side’s relegation from the Bundesliga, so he will be looking to rectify his career at the competition. However, Romania’s best midfielder is domestic-based Alexandru Chipciu who has scored nine goals for Steaua Bucharest this season. Romania won’t be keeping much ball possession though, so any midfield option could be a risky one.

Forwards

The forward options are rather limited, Romania scoring just eleven goals in ten qualifying games. You would be wise to avoid them, but if you wanted to take a punt then Bogdan Stancu would be a shout with ten league goals in the Turkish top tier this season, as well as finding the back of the net twice in the Euro 2016 qualification stages.
