Aguero vs Kane – FPL Dilemma

This season is the first in many, where the managers are prepared to go into gameweek 1 without an elite forward. Last season, two defenders and three midfielders scored more points than the top scoring forward Aubameyang.

This season, managers are expecting the trend to continue, with mid-priced forwards providing value for money while the spare cash can be used to beef up the midfield and defence. Although this looks like the best strategy to start the new season, this formation lacks flexibility and can force you to take a hit as early as gameweek 2.

Kane, Aguero and Aubameyang all face favourable fixtures in gameweek 1. If one of them scores a double digit haul then managers will be hurrying to get them and it’ll be hard to squeeze them in without taking a hit and selling an elite midfielder. Each season springs a new surprise and although no one can predict how this season might go, the smartest strategy will be to start with an elite player in each position.

So who do you bring in as your elite forward? A fully rested and fit Kane or the ever reliable Aguero?

The much expected “Jesus sharing Aguero’s minutes” didn’t happen much as anticipated last season. Pep clearly utilised Aguero whenever he was fit and available for selection. However, with Aguero turning 31 this year and City is expected to go deeper into all major tournaments again this season, Jesus may finally get another chance to nail down a starting spot or rotate with Aguero regularly to manage the minutes of the Argentinian talisman.

Kane, on the other hand had an injury plagued 18/19 season playing just over 2,400 minutes and registering 17 goals. He was often found playing in a deeper role to the frustration of his owners and shared the goals with Son, who had an amazing season.

However, whenever Kane played more than 2,500 minutes, he has scored 20+ goals and it’s also worth mentioning that he had registered 29 goals each in the previous two seasons.

Verdict

With Son Suspended for the first three gameweeks and Sterling being the first name on Pep’s teamsheet, Kane could be the go-to option over Aguero going into gameweek 1 with Sterling or KDB providing cover for the City attack. Kane has had his first proper rest in so many years and he’ll be fit and ready to compete again for the golden boot this season. He’s also the first name on Poch’s teamsheet, takes penalties, and loves to score against Arsenal (GW4 captain material?).

Other than Man city in gameweek 2, the fixtures look plum until gameweek 9. So expect Harry to take FPL by storm this August and be the first major bandwagon of the season.
