Angelino – Fantasy Football Potential

Manchester City have re-signed Angelino from PSV after selling him just a year ago. Manchester City triggered his buy-back clause of €12 million after selling him for €5 million. The 22 year old has signed a 4 year deal with the Premier League Champions. He is primarily bought as the cover for Benjamin Mendy and Oleksandr Zinchenko. “Angelino is a hugely talented young player and is an accomplished defender with great potential,” City Director of Football Txiki Begiristain added.

“Over the past year, he has gained excellent experience playing in the Eredivisie and the Champions League with PSV Eindhoven. We’re sure that he will bring additional defensive quality to our squad.”

Player History

Angelino started his career in Deportivo La Coruna’s academy in 2007. He spent 6 years at the academy after which, he was linked to Real Madrid and Barcelona. On 8 July 2012, City snapped him up on a 4 year deal. He was initially signed as an under-18s, but he started playing for the reserves at the age of 16.

In 2014/15, he was a part of many unused substitute appearances in the first team. Meanwhile, he was impressing for the Premier League 2, scoring 4 goals and assisting 2 in 20 appearances.

Manchester City’s sister club, New York City FC signed him on a loan in July 2015. After making 14 appearances and providing 4 assists, he came back to City under Pep. 2016/17 saw him make his Champions League debut against Steaua București. He even started in the EFL Cup win against Swansea City.

But in December he was again loaned out an another sister club in Spain, Girona FC for the rest of the season. But after not making a single appearance, he was loaned just a month later to RCD Mallorca. His 2017/18 season was also a loan to NAC Breda where he did manage 3 goals, 6 assists in around 3,000 minutes in the Eredivisie, and he also picked up 4 rookie of the month awards. 2018/19 was probably his most consistent season of all as he experienced both League and Champions League minutes. He managed a goal and 10 assists in the league, with a couple of assists for a PSV side who had one of the toughest groups in the League.

Fantasy Football Potential

I think Pep is one of the most unpredictable managers when it comes to players to positions. Last season, he took a gamble by playing an attacking midfielder in Zinchenko as a left back and it remarkably paid off. So, considering that David Silva is getting old and this will be his last season for City, Pep might push Zinchenko towards his preferred position as a back up. Benjamin Mendy too, has never stayed fit for a season since coming to City. So, Angelino might have a role to play and could get quite a few minutes for City.

He has been given a price of around £5.0m which could be ideal for a bargain if things go his way. Manchester City have a favourable start, with fixtures against Norwich, Brighton, Bournemouth and West Ham in their first 5, but it may be wise to invest in a more certain starter.
