Callum Robinson – Fantasy Football Potential

Sheffield United announced their third signing of the summer, as Callum Robinson joins from Preston North End, after Luke Freeman and Phil Jakielka joined the Blades earlier this month. Robinson has been brought in as their new record signing, joining for a fee believed to be around £7 million on a four year deal.

The 24 year old forward has already flown to Portugal to meet up with his new team on pre-season. Here’s what Chris Wilder has had to say about the move:

“Callum fits into our structure perfectly as we look to Championship players who we feel can be successful at Premier League level. Callum is someone who was on our radar a number of years ago and he has progressed how we thought he would and hopefully there is plenty more to come“.

Player History

Robinson started his career at Aston Villa, progressing through their youth system and eventually made his debut for the club in 2013 during a League Cup 0-4 defeat against Spurs. During the 2013/14 season he went on to make a further 3 appearances for Villa.

In the summer of 2014, Robinson was sent on a season long loan to Preston North End where he went on to make 25 league appearances (7 off the bench), scoring 4 goals and 4 assists in the 1,588 minutes he played.

In 2015, Robinson was then sent out on loan to Bristol City, however after making just 6 appearances, his loan was cut short and he returned to Villa in January 2016. That said, Preston North End took the forward on loan for the second time, as he made 14 appearances for the club during the second half of the season, scoring 2 goals.

Preston North End subsequently signed Robinson on a permanent deal after the two successful loans. His first season was reasonably successful as he played 42 Championship fixtures, finding the back of the net on 10 occasions and assisting on another 6. 2017/18 wasn’t too bad either, scoring 8 and assisting 7 across 41 appearances in the Championship (30 starts). His final campaign was arguably his best however, as he started 24 games, scoring 12 and assisting another 3.

Internationally Robinson played for England youth levels, from under-16’s through to under-20’s, however he has subsequently chosen to represent Republic of Ireland at senior level, now having 8 caps.

Fantasy Football Potential

Callum Robinson has been added into Fantasy Premier League with a price of £5.5m and classified as a midfielder, which could mean he is an OOP (out of position) option as he often plays further forward on the wings or even up front.

Priced at £5.5m Robinson does make himself a cheap rotational option in midfield, but is in competition with the likes of El Ghazi, Neves and co. With a reasonable opening 3 (Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, & Leicester) he could be a good option, however fixtures do get very tough between gameweeks 4 and 13

One thing that isn’t certain is whether he will be a nailed on starter, as he will be in direct competition with the likes of McGoldrick and Sharp. With the tough fixtures between gameweek 4 and 13, this could give FPL managers the opportunity to sit back and see who Wilder plays more.
