Fantasy Football Potential – Bernd Leno

Arsenal have signed Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Bernd Leno for an undisclosed fee. The 26 year old German made 233 Bundesliga appearances for the club and has played six times for the national side, which would be more if it wasn’t for Manuel Neuer.

Thankfully for Arsenal fans, Leno isn’t shy of some silverware, as he won the 2017 Confederations cup and the 2009 u19’s European champions, both whilst representing Germany.

Arsenal Head coach Unai Emery said:

“We are very pleased that Bernd Leno will be joining us. Bernd is a goalkeeper of high quality and experience. He has been a top performer and regular number one goalkeeper with Leverkusen in the Bundesliga for the past seven years. We are all excited that Bernd has chosen Arsenal Football Club and look forward to start working with him in pre-season.”

Fantasy Premier League Potential (5.0m)

Leno has been priced at £5.0m which I believe is a great price. With Emery now at the helm and a whole host of other signings, Arsenal will be a completely different outfit to deal with next season and should be more defensively solid.

He will be in direct competition with Petr Cech who was first choice last season, but given Leno’s age and the amount of money they would’ve spent on him I can’t see him warming the bench. He is owned by just 4.1% at the moment but I fully expect that number to at least double after the first few rounds of matches.

Arsenal’s first five matches are as follows: Manchester City (H), Chelsea (A), West Ham (H), Cardiff (A) and Newcastle (A). With such a difficult start I would avoid Leno until gameweek 3 and from then he could be a gem for your squad.
