Fantasy Football Potential – Fabian Schär

Newcastle have signed defender, Fabian Schär, from Deportivo La Coruna on a three year deal for an undisclosed fee believed to be around £3 million. This is their fourth signing of the transfer window as he joins Dubravka, Ki and Kenedy.

Fabian Schär is an experienced centre back, having 42 caps for the Switzerland senior side, scoring seven goals in the process, 3 of which came in his first 5 appearances! The 26 year old made an appearance in the World Cup as Switzerland name it to the last 16.

Here’s what Schär had to say about his move:

“I’m not like a typical defender. I of course defend, but I’m quite good with the ball, I like to play. I want to build up the game from behind and I think that is a strength of mine. I have also scored some headers – that could also be a strength and hopefully I can use it here.”

Schär has experience in 3 leagues, the first being the Swiss League where he played a total of 125 games for FC Basel and FC Wil. During this time he scored 18 goals, which isn’t a bad return for the defender. He the moves to Hoffenheim where he played just 30 games over 2 seasons, before moving to Deportivo La Coruna last season.

Playing for Deportivo last season, Schär made 25 appearances, but unfortunately could not stop them from being relegated from La Liga. In that time however Schär did help keep 5 clean sheets, score 2 goals and also provide 2 assists. Joining Newcastle, Schär will have still competition with Lascelles and Lejeune who seem to have the centre back positions nailed down. That said, Lejeune has picked up a knee injury that requires surgery and thus opening the door for Schär as route into the starting eleven.

Newcastle’s opening fixtures are as follows; Spurs (H), Cardiff (A), Chelsea (H), Man City (A) and Arsenal (H). Due to these tough fixtures it may be wise to see how Newcastle do and also as to whether Schär can nail down a starting position within Benitez’s team.
