Fantasy Football Potential – Lucas Torreira

Arsenal have signed Sampdoria midfielder Lucas Torreira for a fee worth in the region of €30 million. The Uruguayan spent a chunk of his summer in Russia representing his country as they were knocked out in the quarter finals by France.

Torreira played 71 times in Série A, scoring four goals and assisting a further four. For Uruguay he has played eight times since his debut at the beginning of the year. The 22 year old is just 5ft 6ins which means he won’t be winning many aerial duels, but his strengths are elsewhere.

Head coach Unai Emery said:

“In Lucas Torreira, we have signed a young player who is a very bright talent in the game. A midfielder with great quality, I have enjoyed watching his performances for Sampdoria in the past two seasons, and we all saw him do very well for Uruguay in the World Cup. He is a young player already with good experience, but who wants to keep on growing.”

Fantasy Premier League Potential (5.0m)

With the poor scoring record that he had at Sampdoria, there is no surprise he is a defensive midfielder and brings very little goal threat, but this Arsenal team already has that in abundance. Torreira will most likely be the pivot in the midfield so not much use for FPL managers.

His price of £5.0m doesn’t change my opinion of him as there are plenty of more attacking players at that price such as Jorginho and Jack Wilshere. Torreira is owned by 1.6%, so some people do have faith in him, but I would wait anyway until after the two difficult games to begin with.

Arsenal’s first five fixtures are as follows: Manchester City (H), Chelsea (A), West Ham (H), Cardiff (A) and Newcastle (A). After the first two matches he could become a decent option but it is always difficult for a defensive midfielder to make an impact in FPL.
