Fantasy Football Potential – Martin Montoya

Brighton have signed Martin Montoya from Valencia on a four year deal for an undisclosed fee. The 27 year old full back is one of a number of new signings that the Seagulls have made during this transfer window as they look to solidify their Premier League position in the 2018/19 season.

Martin Montoya had made 47 appearances for Spanish youth levels, however has not made an appearance for the senior squad as of yet. In that time he did manage to score a solitary goal and won the u21’s European Championships.

Here’s what Chris Hughton has said about his new signing:

“Martin’s pedigree is excellent, and I’m delighted we have been able to add a player of his standing to our squad. There’s no doubt he will improve our options in the right-back position”

Fantasy Premier League Potential (4.5m)

The Spanish defender has previously played for Barcelona and Valencia, however in his 6 years at Barcelona he did spend time out on loan with Inter Milan and Real Betis, only making 61 appearances in that time. However, whilst at Valencia, Montoya managed to have 2 full seasons, playing a total of 54 league games, scoring on two occasions.

The 27 year old has mainly been brought in to solidify the back line of the Seagulls, but he also has an attacking threat with 4 assists for Valencia last season and will look to feed the likes of Glenn Murray with plenty of crosses. At £4.5m, he is fairly priced alongside the other Brighton defenders.

Brighton’s next five games are; Manchester United (H), Liverpool (A), Fulham (H), Southampton (A) and Tottenham (H). Quite a tough run but after gameweek 7, Montoya could be a bargain at £4.5m, but he does love a yellow card so may just be one to keep an eye on for now.
