Ryan Cooney – Fantasy Football Potential

Burnley have signed Ryan Cooney from Bury on a one year deal for an undisclosed fee. The youngster plays as a right back, whilst also capable of playing across the back four.

Here’s what the 19 year old has had to say about his move to the Premier League club:

“It’s a great opportunity with everything there is here. I need to focus back on the Under-23s, rather than the first team, and carry on, work hard and keep improving myself. I’m looking forward to getting up to match sharpness and then it’s time to crack on and see what I can do.”

Player History

At the age of 9, Cooney joined the Bury youth academy and went on to be promoted to the senior side during the 2016/17 campaign. In August 2017, Cooney made his League One debut against Rochdale which ended in a 0-0 draw. Due to his impressive performances he went on to sign a two year deal in October 2017 and made 14 appearances during the 2017/18 campaign.

During his time at Bury, Cooney made 29 appearances for the first team, 15 of them being last season.

Fantasy Football Potential

The Clarets have brought in Cooney to improve the quality of their under-23’s and it is therefore unlikely that the defender will make a appearance in the Premier League this season. He will join up with Joel Senior who was also signed by Burnley to join the under -23’s.

That said, Cooney will certainly look to replicate the success that the likes of Dwight McNeil, Ali Koiki, Josh Benson and Anthony Gelnnon have had as they have made the jump from the under-23’s to the first team squad last season.
