Gameweek 32 Review

Goalkeeper

Wayne Hennessey – Crystal Palace recorded a famous home win in pursuit of Premier League survival as they dismantled Arsenal at Selhurst Park on Monday night, recording a 3-0 win much to the delight of Sam Allardyce. The result sees Crystal Palace six points clear of the relegation zone, despite still having a game in hand on many of their fellow strugglers. Their form of late has made them favourites to beat the drop and secure another top-flight campaign, this time under the short-term former England manager in Allardyce. Wayne Hennessey made several good saves to deny the Gunners on Monday night, and the Wales international will be pleased with his evenings work.

Defenders

Phil Jagielka – Everton have been in fine goal scoring form recently, and put four past Leicester City on Sunday as they ran out 4-2 winners at Goodison Park. Also in goal scoring form is centre-half Phil Jagielka, who netted yet again after putting his side in front against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Tuesday night. Leicester were able to put two past the Toffees, though, as Islam Slimani poked home after an 80-yard run from Demarai Gray. Marc Albrighton also found the net when he curled a freekick past Joel Robles in the Everton net. The win moves Everton level on points with Arsenal, who look like their top four chances have taken a massive hit.

Kieran Trippier – Making just his third league start of the season against Watford on Saturday lunchtime, Kieran Trippier didn’t look at all out of place in the Spurs starting lineup, as he put in a man of the match display in a fantastic 4-0 victory over the Hornets. Dele Alli opened the scoring when Spurs worked a swift counter attack, before the ball was played to the edge of the box for Alli, who worked a couple of yards inside before curling brilliantly beyond former Spurs keeper Heurelho Gomes in the Watford net. This came after Spurs spurned two glorious chances laid on by Trippier into the patch of Vincent Janssen, both of which would have been finished had the Dutchman have been on his toes.

Luke Shaw – One player who has come in for heavy criticism from boss José Mourinho is England international full-back Luke Shaw. Mourinho said when asked about Shaw that his commitment and effort levels weren’t even close to the likes of Matteo Darmian, Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young, who can also occupy the full back positions. In a miraculous u-turn, Shaw has since been on the bench for United before actually completing an hour against Sunderland on Sunday afternoon, where he picked up an assist, as goals from Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Marcus Rashford thrust the Red Devils into fifth position. The win sees Sunderland appear to be doomed, with fans being unable to see where their points are going to come from.

Midfielders

Heung-Min Son – Spurs attacker Heung-Min Son has shown this season why Spurs forked out to bring the South Korea international to London last campaign, with some superior showings as Spurs have grown as a side. Son netted twice against Watford at the weekend, and found his hat-trick illusive after failing to convert some great opportunities. First, he cut inside late on in the first half to drill past Gomes and into the bottom corner from all of twenty yards on his left side. Then, Kieran Trippier would pick out Son, who would slot home first time on the half-volley at the back post. He would then be presented with a golden chance from eight yards, but slotted wide when it looked easier to score. He would also have a volley rattle the crossbar after Trippier played him in.

Andros Townsend & Wilfried Zaha – Crystal Palace wingers Andros Townsend and Wilfired Zaha were on form as they romped to a clinical 3-0 home win against top four chasing Arsenal at Selhurst Park on Monday night. The opener came when Zaha got to the line, before pulling the ball back for Andros Townsend to drill in over the onrushing Petr Cech. This came after just fifteen minutes, but it would take until the hour for Palace to double their advantage. This came when Yohan Cabaye curled a fantastic effort over the goalkeeper from the corner of the penalty area. This sparked wild celebrations from the Eagles faithful, and it would get better. Damian Martinez was adjudged to have brought down Townsend, and Luka Milivojevic stepped up and confidently drilled the ball into the bottom left corner, giving the keeper absolutely no chance.

Jordy Clasie – Southampton came away from the Hawthorns with a fantastic three points after a tough match against West Bromwich Albion on Saturday afternoon. The winner would come through one of Ronald Koeman’s signings in midfield playmaker Jordy Clasie, who ran onto the ball on the edge of the box before using the outside of his boot to drill into the top corner past Ben Foster after 25 minutes of the match. The man of the match for Saints, though, was Fraser Forster, who made three stunning saves to hold onto an impressive victory against a side that have enjoyed a superb Premier League campaign. The best of these came deep into injury time to deny Jonny Evans a very late equaliser.

Eden Hazard – Chelsea continued their title bid with a strong performance and 3-0 win over Bournemouth at Dean Court on Saturday evening. They opened the scoring when Diego Costa slice a poor effort wide from six yards, only for the ball to ricochet off the face on the onrushing Adam Smith and into the net off the post. It left Bournemouth cursing their luck, but Chelsea’s second would be scored on a brilliant counter, when N’Golo Kante released Eden Hazard, who dummied past Artur Boruc, before sliding into the empty net. Bournemouth would find a way back when Josh King’s long-range effort deflected in off David Luiz. Despite Bournemouth’s best efforts, Chelsea would put the match to bed when a freekick on the edge of the penalty area would be curled in quite brilliantly by wing-back Marcos Alonso.

Forwards

Romelu Lukaku – Everton would open the scoring within a minute against Leicester City on Sunday when Tom Davies poked past Kasper Schmeichel after just thirty seconds in the first half. However, Leicester would turn the game around in ten minutes to lead 2-1 through goals from Marc Albrighton and Islam Slimani. Romelu Lukaku would draw the Toffees level when he headed home after a phenomenal cross from Ross Barkley on the right-hand side. Phil Jagielka would then nod home from a Kevin Mirallas corner. This came after Schmeichel had made a superb save to deny Barkley when the England international tried to round the keeper. Lukaku would finish the contest shortly into the second half, when he slotted in from close range. Leicester face Atletico Madrid in midweek and this became evident when they substituted Demarai Gray and Jamie Vardy early in the second half.

Zlatan Ibrahimović – No doubt, Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been the shining light for Manchester United this campaign, and he performed for his side as they recorded a simple 3-0 win over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Sunday afternoon. The Swede curled the opener in from twenty yards after just half an hour, however the match would centre around a controversial red card for Seb Larsson on half time. Henrikh Mkhitaryan doubled United’s lead with a finish in the first minute of the second half, before Marcus Rashford drilled in with just a minute of normal time remaining to seal the victory for José Mourinho’s side. It was an impressive victory for United and may stand them in good stead for a late top four bid.
