FPL Gameweek 33 Review – Fantasy Premier League Tips

Gameweek 33 would see Leicester City prepare to face Atletico Madrid in what is sure to be an enthralling Champions League semi-final second leg. The Foxes trail 1-0 to Diego Simeone’s side, but will be looking for a big performance on their return to the King Power Stadium. Elsewhere, the title race could have been all but over were Chelsea able to claim a massive three points against Manchester United. Arsenal would face Middlesbrough at the Riverside in a late bid to rescue a top four place. Anyway, here’s the FPL Gameweek 33 Review…

Goalkeeper

Heurelho Gomes – Watford secured a 1-0 home win against Swansea City that will likely see them safe as we head into the back end of this campaign. One of the standout performers was Brazilian goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes, who has been a fantastic servant to the Hornets since signing two years ago from Tottenham Hotspur. Gomes, who struggled at Spurs during his spell there, has fought off a challenge from former Manchester City stopper Costel Pantilimon to claim the number one position at Vicarage Road. He has enjoyed a decent season overall, while his side’s performances have left their fans wanting better.

Defenders

Vincent Kompany – A sight that will have seen Manchester City fans delighted would have been that of Vincent Kompany finding the net after yet another long injury lay-off. The Belgian centre-half got on the score sheet as his side ran out 3-0 victors over Southampton at the Etihad on Saturday evening. The win sees Manchester City remain in fourth spot, although they did briefly move into second place prior to Liverpool’s victory over West Brom on Sunday afternoon. City look set to claim a top four spot, but will be weary of Arsenal and Manchester United hot on their heels, leaving nothing decided just yet.

Phil Jagielka – Few players in the league are in better goal scoring form than Everton’s Phil Jagielka at the moment, and that’s not just defenders! His side saw off Burnley 3-1 at Goodison Park on Saturday. The Toffees took the lead just after half time when Phil Jagielka headed in for a third consecutive league match. However, Burnley stunned the home crowd when they were awarded a penalty, which Sam Vokes would convert just seconds after Everton had taken the lead. Everton would take the lead again though, as Ross Barkley’s shot deflected in off Ben Mee, before Lukaku netted in a ninth consecutive home game to seal the three points.

Adrian Mariappa – Watford secured a 1-0 home victory over Swansea City that sees the Swans remain in the bottom three of the Premier League for at least another week. It would be an early goal from French midfielder Etienne Capoue that would ultimately decide the contest. When Alfie Mawson made a mistake at the back for Swansea, Capoue capitalised, as his shot came back after a save from Lukas Fabianski, for the former Spurs man to scramble home. The Swans are now two points from safety, and from Marco Silva’s rapidly improving Hull City side. Swansea will need to recapture the form they showed upon Paul Clement’s arrival.

James Collins – West Ham could only manage a draw away at strugglers Sunderland after conceding in the last minute of the ninety. The Hammers took the lead when Andre Ayew converted after Andy Carroll’s volley fell to him. However, Sunderland would level when Wabhi Khazri’s corner kick found its way in at the far post after twenty-five minutes. West Ham would retake the lead when James Collins put past Jordan Pickford just minutes into the second half. However, it wasn’t to be for West Ham, as Fabio Borini fired home from eighteen yards to keep the Black Cats’ faint survival hopes alive for another week.

Midfielders

Xherdan Shaqiri & Marko Arnautovic – Stoke City turned in an impressive performance to take three points against a Hull City side fighting for their lives on Saturday at the Bet365 Stadium. Austrian forward Marko Arnautovic gave Stoke the lead with a superb strike after just five minutes. However, Hull would equalise five minutes into the second period when Harry Maguire scuffed in to level the match. However, Peter Crouch would put the Potteries back in front after an hour, before Swiss midfielder produced a moment of magic to power home from all of thirty yards, leaving Jakupovic in the Hull goal helpless to stop it. Hull will be looking at fixtures like this knowing they will need to take points in future.

Ander Herrera – Manchester United put in one of the performances of the season to eclipse a Chelsea side that will likely lift the Premier League come May. The star of the show was undoubtedly Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera, who assisted and scored in the victory. Marcus Rashford put United in front when he latched onto a superb pass before skipping past David Luiz and slotting past Asmir Begovic in the Chelsea net. There were cries for handball in the lead up, with Herrera seemingly handling before setting Rashford away. Herrera would double United’s lead when the ball was laid back to him before his powerful effort deflected in over the top of the Bosnian in goal. The result sees the gap at the top cut to four points, and may just see the Blues starting to look over their shoulders.

Kevin De Bruyne – One of the standout performers for Manchester City on Saturday evening was undoubtedly Kevin De Bruyne, who turned in a display of the highest order, assisting twice in the 3-0 victory. Vincent Kompany broke the deadlock in the second half when he headed David Silva’s corner past Fraser Forster. Leroy Sané would then drill home on the counter attack after being played in by De Bruyne with fifteen minutes remaining. Sergio Aguero made sure to have his say when with ten minutes remaining he headed home a third from the Belgian’s cross. It was a strong display from City, who look to be favourites to take that fourth spot come mid-May.

Roberto Firmino – Liverpool ran out 1-0 winners in a tight affair at the Hawthorns as they faced a stern test from Tony Pulis’ West Bromwich Albion side. Despite West Brom making much of the early running, with Nacer Chadli spurning the best chance, Liverpool would take the lead on half time, when a poor freekick would be nodded on by Lucas Leiva, leaving Brazilian midfielder Roberto Firmino to head past Ben Foster. The match would become more stretched in the second period, and West Brom missed a golden chance when Matty Phillips was unable to finish past Simon Mignolet when one-on-one. Alberto Moreno missed a golden chance when he tried his luck from forty-five yards with Ben Foster still in the oppositions half, but the Reds would hold on.

Forwards

Harry Kane – Spurs put on yet another demolition job at home as they secured a second consecutive 4-0 home win over Bournemouth to cut the gap at the top to just four points as we approach the final run-in of this campaign. Moussa Dembele drilled home after a quarter of an hour to give Spurs the lead. Their second would come just two minutes later when the on-form Heung-Min Son would finish off a neat move to double the advantage. Harry Kane would net his customary home goal to celebrate his return from injury, before Vincent Janssen netted his first Spurs goal from open play much to the delight of the home faithful. It sets up a tense end of the season at the top.
