Gameweek 24 FPL Review

Goalkeeper

Kasper Schmeichel – Watford made the trip North to face Leicester City at the King Power on Saturday afternoon. The Foxes were hopeful of a win against a Watford side with just one win in ten as they headed into the match. The Hornets held on until five minutes before half time, when Molla Wague was adjudged to have brought down Jamie Vardy in the area against his former club. Vardy picked himself up and netted from the spot. It would take until injury time for the Foxes’ second, as Riyad Mahrez finished on the counter after some good work from Adrien Silva. The defeat would spell the end for Marco Silva, who was sacked two days later.

Defenders

Victor Moses – It has been somewhat of a stop-start season for Nigerian wing-back Victor Moses at Chelsea. After making the position his own in a fine season last campaign, he has had to battle both David Zappacosta and even Cesar Azpilicueta at times for the position. He came back in for the Blues as they travelled down South to face struggling Brighton and Hove Albion at the AMEX. It was a comfortable match for Chelsea, who burst out the blocks with two quick goals. Moses himself found the net when he was picked out by Charly Musonda, before slotting past Mat Ryan.

Nacho Monreal and Laurent Koscielny – As Arsenal conceded the loss of star man Alexis Sanchez to Manchester United, they made light work of Crystal Palace, with a sparkling opening twenty minutes. Nacho Monreal gave the gunners the lead before Alex Iwobi doubled the advantage, both coming before ten minutes. By twenty the Gunners were out of sight, after goals from Laurent Koscielny and Alexandre Lacazette killed off Palace. A late consolation for Luka Milivojevic would do little to dampen the spirits in the Emirates. With the signing of Henrikh Mkhitaryan and potentially Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Arsene Wenger’s side may have something to look forward to.

Alfie Mawson and Federico Fernandez – Swansea City pulled off the result of the weekend as they turned in a magnificent defensive performance to take all three points at home against a Liverpool side that ended Manchester City’s unbeaten record last time out. Lukasz Fabianski made several superb saves in the first half, before Alfie Mawson swept home after a scramble in the box. From there it was a case of holding on in the second half, and the Swans did so brilliantly, despite Roberto Firmino’s late header striking the upright in the closing moments.

Midfielders

Eden Hazard and Willian – Belgian winger Eden Hazard was the star of the show as Chelsea made light work of Brighton at the AMEX on Saturday. He opened the scoring himself after just three minutes. They doubled the lead with one of the best goals you will see this season. Willian played the ball to Hazard before flicks from him and then Michy Batshuayi set the ball up for the Brazillian to hammer home from twenty yards. Eden Hazard netted his second with a fine solo effort, before Victor Moses added some gloss to the scoreline with a minute remaining.

Joe Allen – New Stoke City boss Paul Lambert got off the perfect start as Potters manager as he led his new side to a 2-0 victory over Huddersfield Town at the Bet365 Stadium. In what was a surprise move by Stoke, given Lambert’s recent ventures, his side took the lead after fifty-three minutes when Joe Allen gave his side the lead. Huddersfield failed to threaten despite their three efforts on target. They doubled their advantage when Mame Biram Diouf took advantage of some poor defending to score. It’s a perfect start for Lambert, who will be looking to avoid a relegation scrap.

Anthony Martial – It’s never easy to travel to Turf Moor to face Burnley. The Clarets have one of the best home records in the league, and Jose Mourinho knew his side would have to be on top form to secure all three points, the week after they cut the gap between themselves and their cross-town neighbours City to twelve points. In the end they would get what they came for as they recorded a good 1-0 win, albeit in a scrappy manner. The decisive goal would come from French international Anthony Martial, as he smashed in off the crossbar after good work from Romelu Lukaku.

Forwards

Sergio Aguero – It’s been a strange season for Sergio Aguero. So often the star man, he hasn’t featured as much as he would like to so far this campaign. However, he was back to form as his Manchester City side swept aside Newcastle United at Eastlands in a 3-1 win. He opened the scoring when he flicked on a Kevin De Bruyne effort past Karl Darlow. He doubled the lead from the spot after Raheem Sterling was brought down. Jacob Murphy pulled a goal back as he chipped Ederdon. However, Aguero completed the scoring and his hat-trick as he slammed past Darlow after good work from Leroy Sane.
