Gameweek 30 FPL Review

Goalkeeper

Petr Cech – One man who was desperate for an impressive performance given Arsenal’s recent form was Petr Cech. The former Chelsea man had been stuck on 199 Premier League clean sheets for some time, but the visit of Watford gave him the perfect chance to hit number 200. He hit the milestone in style, as he saved a Troy Deeney penalty at the Emirates to help his side preserve a two-goal lead. They would go on to record a 3-0 victory and record a much-needed league win after a poor run of form.

Defenders

Serge Aurier – Tottenham Hotspur moved into 3rd position in the Premier League as they recorded an impressive 4-1 win over AFC Bournemouth at Dean Court on Sunday afternoon. However, the talking point of the match was undoubtedly a pair of injuries that may mean as much to England as it did Spurs. First was Harry Kane, who went off with an ankle injury that looked concerning following an awkward fall. The second was Dele Alli, who was also looking set to be an integral part of the England World Cup squad. It leaves fans all over the country holding their breath ahead of the tournament in Russia.

Shkodran Mustafi – Arsenal have hit back at many of their critics in the past week, as they recorded two massive wins. First, they faced AC Milan at the San Siro on Thursday, where they recorded a superb 2-0 victory. Henrikh Mkhitaryan netted his first goal for the club, before some brilliant passing play saw Mesut Ozil feed Aaron Ramsey, who danced round the ‘keeper before tapping into an empty net. They could have had more but remained solid at the back to put themselves in a commanding position ahead of the second leg in North London.

Leighton Baines – It’s been a difficult season for Everton. After a series of promising signings in summer, Toffees fans could have been forgiven for expecting big things from a side managed by Ronald Koeman. Fast forward to now, and things have changed somewhat. They find themselves in 9th position under Sam Allardyce, having flirted with relegation most of the season. They effectively confirmed survival as they beat Brighton at Goodison on Saturday. An own goal from Gaetan Bong, and a second goal in as many games for Cenk Tosun saw the Toffees record a 2-0 win that was always relatively comfortable.

Midfielders

KenedyJonjo Shelvey – Newcastle United game themselves a good chance of remaining in the Premier League as they recorded a fantastic 3-0 victory over fellow relegation rivals Southampton at St. James’ Park on Saturday. Brazilian Kenedy, on loan from Chelsea, netted a brace for the Magpies, and has impressed since his temporary switch from the Blues. The other goal came courtesy of Matt Ritchie, and the result would see Saints manager Mauricio Pellegrino relieved of his duties as boss. Mark Hughes is the current favourite for the position.

David Silva – Manchester City came into their away clash with Stoke City as firm favourites, with the Potteries floundering in 19th position after a long time in England’s top flight. David Silva put City in front early on, as he raced onto Raheem Sterling’s pullback to slot into the far corner from the edge of the box. It looked like things may get worse for Stoke, however it took Pep Guardiola’s side until the 50th minute to find a second. It came courtesy of Silva again, after he was set up by Gabriel Jesus. The Spaniard beat Jack Butland to the ball and prodded past the England international to seal the three points.

Heung-Min Son – One of Spurs’ standout players this season has been Heung-Min Son, and he was in fine form, as his Spurs side ran out 4-1 winners against Bournemouth at Dean Court. They went behind when Junior Stanislas drilled home, having already hit the bar just moments earlier. However, Dele Alli levelled shortly before the break, and a second half onslaught saw Spurs run away with it, courtesy of a Son brace, as well as Serge Aurier netting in stoppage time. The result sees Spurs move into 3rd in the Premier League.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan – Arsenal recorded an impressive 3-0 win over Watford at the Emirates on Sunday afternoon. They opened the scoring when Shkodran Mustafi headed in from an Ozil cross. They doubled the lead when Henrikh Mkhitaryan fed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who rounded the ‘keeper and slotted home. After Troy Deeney saw his spot-kick saved by Petr Cech, the Hornets were punished when Mkhitaryan scored his first league goal for the club, to seal what was a relatively comfortable win for the Gunners.

Forwards

Chris Wood – Burnley recorded a resounding 3-0 win over West Ham United at the London Stadium on Saturday, as the Hammers fans made their feelings towards their owners know in a series of angry outbursts. In an even match, two quickfire goals saw the Hammers struggling. A late third by Chris Wood killed the match, after several fans had invaded the pitch during the match. The fans were supposed to protest before the match, however it was cancelled last minute, which perhaps contributed to the problems that resulted.
