Tottenham – Fantasy Football Potential – FPL Tips

Tottenham will look back at their 2015-16 campaign with mixed feelings. What was effectively their most exciting season in recent history will always be tainted by a very frustrating end, which saw them fail to win any of their last four games, suffering a 5-1 defeat to an already relegated Newcastle side on the last day of the season. Perhaps even worse than the poor results and their failure to beat Leicester to the title was the fact that their north London rivals, Arsenal, were able to leapfrog them to 2nd place in the league table.

However, on reflection, Pochettino and Tottenham fans will have plenty to be pleased about from what the team accomplished last season. A number of youthful, promising players stepped up and became key members of the Spurs team, they went toe-to-toe with eventual Champions, Leicester City, for the most part of the season and they managed to score more goals than every other team in the league, while conceding the joint fewest.

STAR MAN – Harry Kane (11.0m)

After a slightly jaded start to the campaign, Kane finally got off the mark against Bournemouth in gameweek 10, scoring 3 goals and providing 1 assist and went on to enjoy a very consistent goal scoring record for the remainder of the season. The Englishman is undoubtedly the main attacking option to consider from Spurs, with an incredible record of 49 goals from 86 league appearances for the club since 2014.

Last season, Kane was able to see off competition from Jamie Vardy and Sergio Aguero to become the Premier League’s top goal scorer, with 25 goals. He demonstrated his potential to be explosive by scoring 2 goals or more in 7 games, making him an appealing captain option. Kane also took more attempts on goal than any other player in the league, including attempts from inside the area and attempts on target. Despite only picking up 3 assists last season, he created 44 chances for his teammates, so was perhaps unfortunate not to pick up more.

HIDDEN GEM – Christian Eriksen (8.5m)

While Harry Kane and Dele Alli stole the limelight and quickly became the favourite picks from Spurs last season, Christian Eriksen was quietly enjoying yet another successful season himself. Since joining the club in 2013, Eriksen has established himself as their most creative midfielder, directly contributing to 52 goals (23 goals, 29 assists), in 98 league appearances.

Eriksen picked up 16 assists and created an incredible total of 114 chances last season, only Dimitri Payet and Mesut Ozil were able to create more. While he’s mainly thought of as a creative player, Eriksen’s shooting stats last season were also very impressive; he managed more attempts on target than any other Spurs midfielder. He’s also a master of set pieces, being first choice for corners and free kicks, with 2 of his 6 goals last season coming from direct free kicks. With Dele Alli’s price having been increased to 8.5m this season, level with Eriksen’s, the Danish midfielder looks much more appealing this time around.

BARGAIN OPTION – Kevin Wimmer (5.0m)

Toby Alderweireld offers the most secure way into the Tottenham backline and is undoubtedly their best defensive option, but he comes in with a hefty price tag of 6.5m this season. With Jan Vertonghen currently sidelined through injury, Kevin Wimmer looks likely to earn a place in the starting lineup for the opening weeks of the season. He’s clearly a risky long-term pick, but for anyone looking to make use of an early wildcard or simply willing to take the risk, it’s a great way into the defence that conceded the joint fewest goals last season, keeping 13 clean sheets in the process.
