Fantasy Football Potential – Virgil van Dijk

Liverpool have bolstered their defence with the acquisition of Southampton centre back Virgil Van Dijk for a hefty fee of £75,000,000. The Dutchman had been linked with Liverpool for a few transfer windows but has now completed his move to the Merseyside club.

This season, Van Dijk hasn’t got as much game time as he would have liked due to the transfer rumours surrounding him in the summer. He joins a long list of Saints players to have moved to Liverpool including Dejan Lovren, who could be his new partner in the centre of defence.

“I think it’ll be something special,” he said. “I think Anfield is a very special stadium and it is my home right now as well. “I am just looking forward to being on the pitch, especially as a [home] player at the stadium. It’s going to be nice, especially the evening games and the European nights.”

Fantasy Premier League Potential

Due to his lack of game time, Van Dijk’s price has stooped down to £5.4m which is good news for FPL managers. His price makes him the most expensive starting Liverpool defender but with his fantastic goal threat, which he proved in his debut against Everton, he could pay back the extra money you’ll be paying for him.

It is widely known that Liverpool do leak goals, especially away from home, but Van Dijk may be what they need to sure up their backline. Interestingly, the Dutch defender can also take a decent free kick, and with Coutinho off to Barcelona, he could be on free kicks for Liverpool.

Liverpool’s next five fixtures are: Manchester City (H), Swansea (A), Huddersfield (A), Spurs (H), and Southampton (A). These fixtures may look difficult due to two games against fellow top six sides, but they’re both at Anfield where they usually raise their performances and their away games are favourable.
