Fantasy Football Potential – Matej Vydra

Burnley signed Matej Vydra from Derby County, who was the top scorer in the Championship last season. Vydra has signed a three year deal for an undisclosed fee.

Matej Vydra does have international experience with Czech Republic, playing 40 games for various youth levels and 20 games at the senior level since 2012. In his 20 games, he has scored on 5 occasions, however he couldn’t help them get to the 2018 World Cup.

Here’s what Vydra has had to say about his move to Burnley:

“For the last four years I have been fighting to be in the Premier League. I haven’t done it with the teams I was playing for and sometimes it has to be done with a transfer and now I’m so happy.”

Fantasy Premier League Potential (6.0m)

Before his move to Derby, Vydra had played at various clubs, but the majority of his games had been at Watford where he played a total of 84 games across 3 seasons, scoring 36 goals. His most successful season with the Hornets was the 2012/13 season, where he was the Championship player of the season after he scored 20 in 41 games. Vydra has played 187 games in the Championship, with 65 goals. His only season in the Premier League was with West Brom as he scored 3 in 23 games, which wasn’t great, but Burnley will be hoping this time he will be able to convert the Championship form into the Premier League.

Last season, Vydra was the Championship’s top goal scorer with 21 goals in 40 league appearances, whilst also picking up 4 assists in that time. Vydra had joined Derby for a record fee in August 2016, but now he’s at Burnley, he will be competing against the likes of Chris Wood (£6.5m), Sam Vokes (£5.5m) and Ashley Barnes (£6.0m) for a starting spot. Priced at £6.0m, it’s no doubt Vydra will get game time, however it could be in the Europa league as he could be used to rotate with the current forwards.

Burnley’s next five games are; Watford (H), Fulham (A), Manchester United (H), Wolves (A), and Bournemouth (H). Not a bad run, with United being the only tough fixture. That said, it may be wise to wait and see whether or not Vydra gets a starting spot in the Premier League eleven.
