Defender vs. Defender, Manchester City vs. Arsenal. Two of the more “senior” members of both their club sides. Which one do you pick? Well, we will try to advise you of which to pick. Per Mertesacker comes in at 5.5m and Vincent Kompany comes in at 6.0m. So, who did you pick?
Per Mertesacker actually managed an assist last season and people say he is over the hill, go on Per! He also helped Arsenal keep 12 clean-sheets and helped them to secure an impressive third place finish (not 4th!). He managed to bring home 121 points, the same as Thibaut Courtois. This season, Per could find himself in a fight for a starting position. I expect Koscielny to be a first team pick and with Bellerin, Gabriel, Gibbs and Debuchy planning on fighting hard for starting places will find Per Mertesacker in a fight all too real.
The big Belgian had one of his worst seasons last season for Manchester City. 66 points from 38 games is pretty lacklustre to say the least. No goals, or no assists is a terrible return, if you ask me, but he wasn’t helped with his fitness. With Pablo Zabaleta not being back from the Copa America for gameweek 1 at least, Alex Kolarov will probably play in his place or maybe Bakary Sagna. Gael Clichy will play the other side. So, it is a case of Martin Demichelis or Eliaquim Mangala to partner Kompany in the Manchester City defence, unless they bring in someone, such as the Valencia defender Nicolas Otamendi.
Who to choose?
So, out of the two heavy hitters (in real life), not in FPL, who do you choose? Will you go with the cheap option, or go and spend the extra 0.5m and go on the Belgian over the German. If you look at the fixtures (first six) maybe you will be persuaded. Arsenal play: West Ham (H), Crystal Palace (A), Liverpool (H), Newcastle (A), Stoke City (H) and Chelsea (A). Other than the two first two games, easy enough, the next four fixtures could be toughies. Especially with the squad overhaul going on at Newcastle.
Manchester City’s first six fixtures are: West Brom (A), Chelsea (H), Everton (A), Watford (H), Crystal Palace (A) and West Ham (H). Okay, so do you go off these fixtures, because if you ask me, based on the fixtures, I’d pick Vincent Kompany, but, based on last season’s statistics, I’d go with the German!
