Manchester United have splashed the cash on another central midfielder. Jose Mourinho has made Fred his first summer signing, spending a reported £47 million on the little Brazilian. He unfortunately picked up an injury whilst with Brazil and played no part in their quarter final finish in Russia.
United have signed Fred from Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk where he won many trophies. He picked up a three league titles, three Ukrainian Cups and four Ukrainian super cups. Many current Premier League stars came from Shakhtar including Henrik Mkhitaryan, Fernandinho and Willian.
Willian on his former Shakhtar teammate:
“He has a lot of quality, he can improve a lot. He goes to one of the best teams in the world and I’m happy for him. I hope he does well at Manchester United. He is very happy to come to the Premier League to play, we talked a little bit about that.”
Fantasy Premier League Potential (6.0m)
Fred has been priced at £6.0m which I believe is slightly too steep for many fantasy managers. With the amount of money Mourinho has spent on him, naturally you would expect he will start for Man United alongside Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic.
However he will predominantly be playing as a defensive midfielder so won’t be able to grab too many goals or assists. He has been compared to Fernandinho who is actually cheaper than Fred, so it may be worth holding off to see how he settles in.
Manchester United’s first five fixtures are as follows; Leicester (H), Brighton (A), Tottenham (H), Burnley (A) and Watford (A). These five games could be awkward for United and Fred will get a good taste of what the Premier League it all about.
