Season Prospects – Southampton

SOU

Southampton started the last season with a lot of doubters. They had lost  a lot of their star players over the summer and many, including myself thought they would struggle and would end up in the bottom half of the table. Boy how we are wrong. Ronald Koeman and his new fit team, started the season really well and were up and around the top four. Come the end of the season they had faded off a little, but a 7th place finish was a brilliant result for a team which had lost many players the summer before.

This season Ronald Koeman will be trying to hold onto those players that impressed last season, however this may is already becoming a struggle, as Nathaniel Clyne has already left to join Liverpool and the likes of Morgan Schneiderlin also eying an exit. However, I have no doubt that Koeman will bring in the right men and Southampton will be a force to be reckoned with this coming season too.

STAR MAN – Jose Fonte (5.5m)

Jose Fonte is always at the helm of Southampton and as their captain he leads by example. He provides that solidarity at the back, organising his back four and giving every team a hard time getting a goal. Fonte didn’t have the most prolific offensive season, with no goals and only one assist in the 2014/2015 season. However what he does give is true leadership from the top of the club and there is always the chance of a clean sheet when he features in the line up. This is one player Koeman will definitely want to keep hold of if they want to do better than that of last season.

HIDDEN GEM – Juanmi (6.0m)

Juanmi is probably relatively unknown to many of the Premier League fans, but the signing from Malaga for an undisclosed fee has the potential to shine in this Southampton squad. The forward managed to grab 8 goals in 26 appearances last season with Malaga and although that isn’t the most impressive return, I’m sure he will be one to watch under Ronald Koeman. He has already featured in the Saints pre-season tour and already found the back of the net in what was a 3-5 loss too RB Leipzig. With a price of just 6.0m he could be a fantasy football bargain, however the one concern is whether or not his game time will be limited with the likes of Pelle at the club.
