FPL Dilemma – Sergio Aguero vs Diego Costa

Two of the most popular and expensive fantasy Premier League players this season, see many fantasy managers having an internal debate on who to pick. Should it be Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero (13.0m) or Chelsea’s Diego Costa (11.0m)? Both love a goal and although both suffered from some injuries during the season, they managed a total of 46 goals between them! So who should feature in your team?

Sergio Aguero

Last season, Agüero managed 26 goals and 10 assists over the course of the 2014/15 Premier League season, earning himself the golden boot and easily justifying his title as the most expensive player in the game this year. Agüero and Manchester City have West Brom (A), Chelsea (H), Everton (A), Watford (H), Palace (A) and West Ham (H) over the course of their first 6 games. The first 3 games for last season’s runners-up will be challenging but the next three are bliss, Watford and West Ham particularly. City love hammering Premier League new boys in their backyard as proven in recent years, so maybe Aguero will fancy a goal or two.

Diego Costa

Over the course of last season, Costa managed 20 goals and 3 assists, which was over less game time than Aguero, as he had an injury troubled first season in the Premier League. Chelsea and Costa’s first 6 fixtures are; Swansea (H), Manchester City (A) West Brom (A), Palace (H), Everton (A) and Arsenal (H). Its a difficult start for the Blues, however the opening fixture is pretty mouth-watering as last season the scoreline’s finished 4-2 and 5-1 respectively. This particular fixture brings goals, and last season, Costa returned 4 goals and 3 assists. The Manchester City fixture isn’t so fruitful, as we all know by now Mourinho’s tactics in the big games. He hasn’t lost a single match against a top four opponent so Chelsea are quite effective at shutting out the big teams to say the least! West Brom and Crystal Palace will be a bit more tempting, but both will be looking for a top half finish this season so could prove to be difficult matches. Everton and Arsenal will also be difficult fixtures.

Who to choose?

With Aguero possibly missing the opening couple of games coupled with his 13.0m price tag, I’d stay away from the start, but keep a keen eye on him from the sidelines, watching his progress and potentially having the chance of picking him up 0.1 or 0.2m cheaper ahead of those good fixtures from gameweek 4 onwards. Also, despite a blistering start last season from Diego Costa which saw him net 7 times in 4 games, I’d stay away again. Although Chelsea will fancy their chances in all of these matches, particularly the WBA & Palace games as I said, Manchester City, Arsenal, Palace, West Brom & Everton will all be tough games. Out of the two, Sergio Aguero would marginally come out on top, with the easier fixtures, although he may be rested at the start of the season.
