Fantasy Football Potential – Alfie Mawson

Fulham have signed defender Alfie Mawson from Swansea on a four year deal for a fee that could rise to £20 million. Fulham have already made a number of signings this summer and the addition of Mawson will certainly improve their squad as the 24 year old already has Premier League experience with Swansea.

Alfie Mawson is yet to make his senior debut for England, but did make six appearances for the u21’s scoring on one occasion. He originally started his career Brentford and has spent time on loan with Luton, Welling and Wycombe Wanderers, before moving to Barnsley. It was his 49 appearances with Barnsley that impressed Swansea and he joined them in 2016.

Here’s what Mawson has had to say about his move to Fulham:

“The Football being played last season was lovely on the eye but also effective and I can’t wait to be a part of it. I’m excited to be a part of this great club moving forward and to help achieve success in the Premier League.”

Fantasy Premier League Potential (5.0m)

During his two Premier League campaigns with Swansea, Mawson made 65 appearances, scoring on six occasions, with one assist. This is an attacking return every 9.2 games, which is quite a feat for a defender. This goal threat has always been a part of his game, as he scored 8 in 49 appearances for Barnsley also.

Priced at 5.0m, Mawson is the most expensive Fulham defender, with the remainder all being priced at 4.5m, with him likely to partner Tim Ream at centre back. Last season Mawson made 288 CBI’s (clearances, blocks and interceptions), whilst his pass completion rate was 81.1%. These attributes should help improve the potential for clean sheets.

Fulham’s first five fixtures are as follows; Crystal Palace (H), Tottenham (A), Burnley (H), Brighton (A) and Manchester City (A). It is a mixed bag of fixtures, but with three favourable fixtures in their first five, Mawson may just be a great rotational defender, especially with their favourable run of fixtures at home. That said however, it may be wise to keep an eye on his current knee injury to ensure that he is available.
