Fantasy Football Potential – Angus Gunn

Southampton have made the signing of Manchester City goalkeeper Angus Gunn for a fee estimated at £13.5 million. Gunn leaves the Etihad failing to make a single appearance for the club. He spent last season out on loan at Norwich where he played every single league game and five cup matches, bringing his total tally for the campaign to 51 games.

Also, Gunn has gone through the ranks of the England national team. He played 27 times in an England shirt and in November 2017 he received his first senior call up when Jack Butland withdrew through injury. A few months later, Scotland manager Alex McLeish attempted to persuade him to switch allegiances but he declined.

Southampton manager Mark Hughes said:

“Angus is a player who clearly possesses a tremendous amount of potential, but his performances for Norwich and for the England Under-21 team also demonstrate the capabilities he already has right now.”

Fantasy Premier League Potential (4.5m)

Before addressing whether he is worth his price you have to ask the question of whether he will start, and I believe he will. Southampton have spent a lot of money on the young keeper and they wouldn’t want him warming the bench. Alex McCarthy had played well at the back end of the season, but Gunn may just sneak it.

As for Fraser Forster, his Southampton career could be over so I wouldn’t consider him having a chance to dethrone either of them. Gunn has been priced at £4.5m which is fair and could be a great price if Southampton can rediscover their form from past seasons which have seen them finish in the top half.

Southampton’a first five fixtures are as follows: Burnley (H), Everton (A), Leicester (H), Crystal Palace (A) and Brighton (H). It’s a fairly reasonable start for Mark Hughes’ men and providing Gunn gets given the nod, he should grab a few clean sheets from these matches.
