Fantasy Football Potential – Diogo Dalot

Manchester United have signed teenager Diogo Dalot for FC Porto for a fee in the region of £19 million. The 19 year old joins United after just six games for Porto’s first team which indicates how highly Jose Mourinho must rate him.

Despite his age Dalot has already won some silverware. He played a small part in Porto’s title winning campaign last season and also won the u17 European Championship with Portugal back in 2016, where he also grabbed a place in the team of the tournament.

Mourinho said:

“Diogo is an extremely talented young defender with all the qualities to quickly become a great player for this club. He has all the attributes that a full-back needs: physicality, tactical intelligence and technical quality, combined with a Porto Academy mentality which prepares players for the maturity they need at the professional level.”

Fantasy Premier League Potential (5.5m)

Dalot has been priced at £5.5m, which for me makes him un-ownable. This makes him the same price as nailed on starter Eric Bailly which is just scandalous as Dalot is in competition with Antonio Valencia, who is one of the best full backs in the league. He can also play left back, but Ashley Young and Luke Shaw will be ahead of him.

If Valencia does pick up an injury then Dalot will be a fantastic option, but barring that he won’t be on many people’s radars. With his age, I believe in a couple of years’ time he could become a great player with a solid place in the starting eleven but for this season he seems to be out of the equation in terms of FPL.

Manchester United’s first five fixtures are as follows: Leicester (H), Brighton (A), Tottenham (H), Burnley (A) and Watford (A). It’s a reasonable start for Mourinho’s men but I can’t see Dalot playing a sufficient part in it.
