Fantasy Football Potential – Jason Steele

Brighton and Hove Albion have signed Jason Steele from Sunderland on a three year deal as the Seagulls look to strengthen their squad. Steele only managed to get 18 appearances for Sunderland last season, in a campaign where they suffered back to back relegations from the Championship.

Jason Steele has previously played for the England u21’s, making 7 appearances, but has struggled to break through into the senior squad as of yet. Steele had made 98 appearances for Blackburn, before he picked up an injury and struggled to regain the number one spot and he then made his move to Sunderland.

Here’s what Chris Hughton has had to say about the new signing:

“Mat Ryan performed exceptionally well for us in the Premier League last season and Jason’s arrival will, following Niki Maenpaa’s departure, restore the options we have in this position.”

Fantasy Premier League Potential (4.0m)

Jason Steele has mainly been brought in as Maenpaa rejected a new deal with Brighton, but from the quote above it is clear that Steele has been brought into the squad to ensure they have depth and a solid back up’s in case of injuries to the likes of Mat Ryan. What is not clear is whether or not Steele will be the second or third keeper, as if he is second then he could be a bargain if there are to be any injuries and thus could be one to monitor over the course of the season.

Therefore when it comes to Fantasy Premier League potential Steele really doesn’t have any at the start of the season, unless there are pre-season injuries. That said, Brighton don’t have the easiest of starts in the first instance, as their first five include games against; Watford (A), Manchester United (H), Liverpool (A), Fulham (H) and Southampton (A).
