Fantasy Football Potential – Max Meyer

Crystal Palace have signed Max Meyer on a free transfer as his contract with Schalke had expired. At 22, Meyer has signed a three year deal with the Eagles and becomes Palace’s third signing of the summer after Vicente Guaita and Cheikhou Kouyate.

Max Meyer has played on four occasions for Germany, but was unfortunately (or fortunately) not part of the squad that went to Russia that could not get out of the group. He did however help his nation to a Silver medal in the Rio 2016 Olympics and also won the u21’s European Championship in 2017.

Here’s what Meyer has said about his move:

“I’m proud to be here and I hope I can make the next step in my career. I want to give my best and I think we can have a good season – maybe better than the last.”

Fantasy Premier League Potential (6.0m)

Meyer progressed through Schalke’s youth system, making his debut for the senior team in 2013. He then went on to make 192 appearances, including 16 appearances during 3 Champions League campaigns, scoring 22 goals and providing 24 assists, an attacking return in just over every fourth game. Last season he played 21 games as Schalke came runners up in the Bundesliga.

Meyer has been priced at 6.0m, does make him an interesting proposition. That said, it’s not quite clear how much fantasy potential he has. This is because although he played 21 games last season, he failed to score in any, mainly due to him being utilised as a defensive midfielder.

Crystal Palace’s first five fixtures are as follows; Fulham (A), Liverpool (H), Watford (A), Southampton (H) and Huddersfield (A). A reasonable set of fixtures, however it is not clear whether or not Meyer will start due to him not even being in the squad for the pre-season fixture against Toulouse. That said it may take him a week or two to settle in an is certainly one to keep an eye on.
