Adam Webster – Fantasy Football Potential

Brighton have signed Adam Webster from Bristol City in what is a club record, £20 million deal, signing on a four year deal. Aged 24, the highly rated centre back makes the switch from the Championship to the Premier League, joining the Seagulls.

Here’s what Brighton boss, Graham Potter has had to say about the signing:

“He is a quality defender, comfortable on the ball and fits the profile of the player we want to bring to the club. He was very keen to join us. Predominately a centre-half, he can also play at right-back, and he will bring additional competition alongside our existing defensive options.”

Player History

Webster started his career at Portsmouth, joining the side at the age of 12, signing a scholarship in 2012. Across the 2011/12 campaign, Webster was given just 17 minutes of Championship football across 3 games, however this did improve in the following campaign playing 981 minutes in League One, making 10 starts.

In August 2013, Webster signed of Aldershot Town on a 6 month loan deal, whilst during his time at Aldershot he managed to make 24 league appearances, keeping 7 clean sheets and providing the one assist. He returned to Portsmouth to make 4 appearances in League Two, scoring two goals and keeping a single clean sheet. 2015/16 was the breakthrough season for Webster as he featured on 27 occasions in League Two, scoring 2 goals, assisting 3 and 7 clean sheets.

June 2016 saw the centre back join Ipswich Town for an undisclosed fee. Webster was with Ipswich for two seasons, making 84 appearances in the Championship, scoring a single goal, proving two assists and keeping 14 clean sheets.

Bristol City then snapped up the defender in June 2018 for an initial fee of £3.5 million. Webster helped sure up the Bristol defence, helping them keep 12 clean sheets in 43 starts in the Championship, whilst he also chipped in with 3 goals.

Internationally, Webster has made a number of appearances at England youth levels, but is yet to make a senior appearance.

Fantasy Football Potential

The signing of Webster increased the rumours that Dunk would be leaving for Leicester as a replacement for Harry Maguire. However, this may not be the case and Brighton may choose to play 5 at the back with Webster slotting in at the back with Duffy and Dunk. That said, it may be Burn who starts the Premier League due to a strong pre-season showing and being more aligned with Potter’s style of play.

Webster has been priced at £4.5m in fantasy premier league and although Brighton have a reasonable start to the Premier League, there are better options in defence at this price point, even Dunk being a more assured starter at £4.5m will be a more favourable pick for your fantasy teams.
