Jordan Ayew – Fantasy Football Potential

Crystal Palace have signed Jordan Ayew from Swansea for a fee of around £2.5 million. Ayew joins the Eagles on a three year deal after spending last year on loan with Palace following the relegation of Swansea the season prior.

With Michy Batshuayi returning to Chelsea after a 6 month loan, Palace needed to ensure they had enough cover up top. Here’s what Hodgson has had to say about the signing of Ayew:

“We are delighted to secure Jordan’s services for another three seasons at Crystal Palace. He has proved himself as a dedicated and hard-working member of the squad, and certainly played his part in the club securing its highest ever Premier League points tally in the last campaign.”

Player History

Ayew started his career at Marseille, joining as a trainee in 2006 and singing his first professional contract in 2009. Ayew made his first appearance for the senior team in December 2009 against Lorient where he scored the equaliser.

Ayew joined Sochaux in January 2014 on a loan to the end of the season, in which he made 17 appearances for the club, scoring 5 goals and providing 2 assists.

In July 2014, Ayew signed for Lorient and this was a great move for the Ghanaian as he went on to score 12, provide 7 assists, all in 29 Ligue 1 starts. This prompted a big move from Aston Villa and he signed for them in July 2015, joining on a five year deal for a fee believed to be around £8 million.

Ayew spent a season and a half at Aston Villa, appearing 51 times, assisting just 2 and scoring 9. At the end of the 2015/16 season, Villa were relegated, however Ayew was their top goalscorer with 7 goals.

In January 2017, Ayew signed for Swansea on a loan until the end of the season, which then became a permanent move at the end of the season. During the 2017/18 Premier League season, Ayew made 36 appearances, scoring 7 and assisting 2.

Following relegation with Swansea, Ayew was loaned to Crystal Palace for the 2018/19 campaign, where he featured on 20 occasions (6 off the bench), scoring just 1 goal and providing 2 assists.

Internationally, Ayew has played 56 times for Ghana, having scored 15 goals, whilst he has also played for the Ghanaian under-20’s.

Fantasy Football Potential

Ayew started the first game of the new season, potentially due to Zaha being named on the bench. Ayew has been priced at £5.0m on Fantasy Premier League and could be a cheap option if he manages to get a good run in the Palace side, which may be possible since the likes of Batshuayi have left the club.

That said, Ayew only managed 1 goal in 14 Premier League starts last season, at a rate of under 3 goals a season, he won’t be worth the investment. That said, if he finds some of the form he has had previously in his career he could be an option.
