Euro 2016 Preview – Spain – Fantasy Football Tips

You know you have a good squad when Juan Mata, Santi Cazorla and Diego Costa don’t get selected. Despite Spain having a World Cup to forget, they enter Euro 2016 as the reigning European Champions, having lifted the trophy in both 2008 and 2012. It will most certainly be difficult to pick just a couple of players from such a talented squad in this summer’s fantasy football, but hopefully we will make your decision making a lot easier over the next few days or so.

Defence

You would expect David de Gea to start in goal for the Iberians, but Manchester United’s goalkeeper of the season will be up against Spain’s all-time capped player and captain in Iker Casillas who has played 166 times for his country. De Gea’s outstanding campaign in England though will surely see him be the first choice shot-stopper this summer. Champions League winner Sergio Ramos is the pick of the centre-backs, who will start alongside La Liga rival Gerard Pique, bar any injuries. Barcelona teammate Jordi Alba and Atletico Madrid’s Juanfran should be their starting back four.

Midfield

Andres Iniesta, arguably one of the greatest midfielders in the history of the game, is one of many fantastic options in this area of the field. Manchester City’s David Silva is available for selection after his 11 Premier League assists, whilst Cesc Fabregas is also in after a strong end to the Chelsea season for him, scoring five and assisting seven. Atletico’s Koke also had a season to remember, with 14 assists in Spain.

Forwards

Costa’s absence will certainly give manager Del Bosque something to think about, potentially leading to a formation that will once again, have no striker, just as they did at Euro 2012 four years ago. 35-year-old Bilbao forward Aritz Aduriz found the net an impressive 20 times in 34 La Liga games, whilst Nolito scored 12 in 28 from Celta Vigo. Juventus striker Alvaro Morata will also give you food for thought, so there are plenty of star names to choose from Spain!
