Watford FPL Preview – Fantasy Football Tips

2018/2019 saw the Hornet’s finish 11th in what was their best ever premier league finish and record premier league points total. Impressive as it may seem, any Watford fan will in fact tell you that this was a slightly disappointing finish, given what could have been. All throughout the season the Hornet’s were battling it out to be the ‘best of the rest’, but their impressive FA cup run which saw them reach the final diverted their attention from the league and left all fans wondering what could have been.

The summer of 2019/20 was always going to be relatively quiet for Watford, since much of the focus was on trying to keep hold of key players such as Doucoure and Deulofeu, so things have been quiet on the incomings (thus far). Craig Dawson from West Brom looks to be a smart signing at £5.5m and has been the only real incoming who is FPL-viable thus far. A big money deal for Ismaila Sarr has been on the books for a while but is yet to be confirmed.

Pre-Season Form

Pre season has been steady for Watford, with the Hornet’s picking up narrow wins vs Bayer Leverkusen and QPR, and suffering a defeat to Ajax in the dying moments. With the lack of signings to implement into the team, preseason has been solely about fitness and trying new systems.

Star Man – Gerard Deulofeu (£6.5m)

A class above and the key to everything positive in attack for Watford last season, Deulofeu looks a solid choice for a second or third choice striker in FPL. At times given the freedom of the final third, Deulofeu often linked up well with Troy Deeney and managed 12 goals and 5 assists during the 2018/19 campaign, despite not making an appearance for the Hornets until October. I expect this to continue into the 2019/20 season and Deulofeu should be considered for your front three on FPL.

Hidden Gem – Kiko Femenia (£4.5m)

The Spanish full back was arguably one of the best outside the top 6 last season, and provides a great option going forward. Despite facing competition from Daryl Janmaat, I expect Kiko to cement his place into the team next season and be a reliable FPL defender. His appeal is further enhanced by the fact that Watford have at times played 5 at the back in preseason, and Kiko has played very high up the field and looks an attacking threat. Selected by just 1.0% of teams, the Spaniard could be an amazing differential pick in FPL.

Gamble – Craig Dawson (£5.0m)

A gamble based solely on price. £5.0m for a Watford defender seems pricey, but if Dawson can rediscover his form at West Brom during their premier league tenure, then the centre back could be a good option for FPL. He has shown in preseason what everybody already knew, that he isn’t afraid to get his head in the mix and is dangerous from set pieces. Watford hope that Dawson can help pick up some more clean sheets, so if you are willing to take the risk on his price, it could hugely pay off.
