Fantasy Football Potential – Benjamin Mendy

Manchester City have continued their spree of defensive signings with the capture of left-back Benjamin Mendy from AS Monaco. The fee is around £50 million, for a 5-year deal.

Benjamin Mendy has been City’s priority signing for left back and this is what he had to say about his new club:

“I am very proud. This is what I wanted from the very beginning. As soon as the championship was over, I talked to my family and it was all clear in my head: I wanted to join Manchester City.

“I think I am the right person for the group. I am easily adaptable. There are some players with whom I exchanged a few emails; I knew them from some years ago.

“Regarding football, I can bring a lot of creativity in the game, I can offer different solutions, I like to take to play as full-back and provide assists for the strikers.”

Fantasy Football Potential

Mendy is a very exciting full back for Fantasy Premier League managers. At 23 years of age he will be at the peak of his potential and will look to shine especially with his £50 million price tag. In the 2016/17 season with AS Monaco he performed exceptionally well in all competitions including the Champions League.

Making 38 appearances in all competitions with 35 of them in the starting XI, his natural fitness could be huge for City throughout the season. Scoring 1 goal in the Coupe de France and 5 assists in the league, showing that Mendy is nothing short of dangerous in the oppositions half. Also, Mendy bagged 3 assists in 6 Champions League appearances last season.

His key attributes are crossing, dribbling and defensive contributions, which make him the ideal left back for City who can, if needed, play left midfield also. He also likes to cut inside and shoot from distance, which can prove valuable in a full back, especially for fantasy managers.

Priced at 6.5m he priced as one of the most expensive defenders on the game with only Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso ahead on 7.0m. I think better options could be found elsewhere for cheaper prices until Mendy proves his worth.

Manchester City’s opening fixtures are as follow; Brighton (A), Everton (H), Bournemouth (A), Liverpool (H) & Watford (A).
