Gameweek 33 would see another dose of drama in the Premier League as we draw ever closer to finding out who will be relegated, while the race for Europe seems all but over. Manchester City would have their first chance to seal a superb league title as they faced rivals Manchester United at Eastlands on Saturday. We also had a Merseyside derby to look forward to. Huddersfield faced Brighton knowing that they needed to take something. Sunday would see Chelsea host West Ham in a London derby. Anyway, here’s the FPL Updates Gameweek 33 FPL Review…

Goalkeeper

Jordan Pickford – Everton faced Liverpool at Goodison Park on Saturday. The Reds made several changes as they prepare for the second leg of their Champions League clash with Manchester City on Tuesday evening. Everton gave a good account of themselves, while largely limiting Jurgen Klopp’s side. That said, Dominic Solanke had a massive chance to score his first Liverpool goal, as he hit Pickford from six yards. Cenk Tosun had a massive chance to win the match late on, however he could only head wide, narrowly missing the target wide of the far post.

Defenders

Cesar Azpilicueta – Chelsea faced West Ham in a feisty encounter at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon. The Blues were all too aware that failure to secure all three points may put pay to their chances of a Champions League place next season. They took the lead when Alvaro Morata headed the ball down in the area, for Azpilicueta to prod home in the first half. However, West Ham showed spirit, and equalised late on when Javier Hernandez slotted home from Arnautovic’s pull-back. The Austrian might have won it but for a superb challenge from N’Golo Kante late on in proceedings.

Cedric – Time is starting to run out for Southampton to secure another season in the Premier League. Mark Hughes seems to have had little impact on a struggling side. However, they do find themselves in an FA Cup semi-final. Cedric scored on of the goals to get them there, and turned in a fantastic performance away at the Emirates as they were unfortunate to come away without a point. One good thing to come from the match was the return of Charlie Austin, who scored within seconds of coming on to level things.

Dejan Lovren – Liverpool spurned several early chances against an Everton side that took a while to grow into the Merseyside derby on Saturday. Jurgen Klopp could be forgiven for having one eye on the second leg of the Champions League quarter final. They lead 3-0 after a fantastic performance at Anfield, but will be wary of a Manchester City side that have been fantastic in front of goal. The Reds will be aware that one goal at Eastlands will mean that City need five, so Klopp has no intention of parking the bus.

Midfielders

Christian Eriksen – Danish playmaker Christian Eriksen has been one of the standout men for Spurs this season. His side recorded a 2-1 win away at Stoke City, which looks to end the Potters’ hopes of performing a miraculous recovery. Spurs went in front when a good move resulted in Dele Alli picking out Eriksen to slot home. However, Stoke equalised when Hugo Lloris’ clearance cannoned off Mame Diouf, leaving the forward with an open goal. However, Eriksen would restore the lead as his freekick seemingly evaded everyone before finding the far corner.

Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez – Manchester United secured a precious victory away against rivals Manchester City to prevent them from securing the league title. The Red Devils found themselves two goals down after Vincent Kompany and Ilkay Gundogan had sent the hosts into half time with a two-goal lead. However, Paul Pogba scored a brace within two second half minutes to level the scores. Chris Smalling then converted from an Alexis Sanchez freekick to complete the turnaround. In a feisty final fifteen minutes City were denied a clear penalty before David De Gea pulled off a world class save to deny Sergio Aguero.

Jack Cork – Burnley will be the first to admit they weren’t at their best against Watford at Vicarage Road on Saturday, but a quickfire double saw them travel back North with all three points. Roberto Peryera gave the Hornets the lead when the ball fell into his path to slot home early in the second half. However, Sam Vokes levelled with his first touch of the ball, having come on just twenty seconds earlier. Goal-line technology decided things when Jack Cork’s effort was adjudged to have crossed the line just two minutes later.

Luka Milivojevic – Crystal Palace travelled to Bournemouth in desperate need of points to ease their relegation fears. They took the lead when Luka Milivojevic curled in a freekick just into the second period. However, the Cherries equalised through Lys Mousset’s low drive from the edge of the area. Palace looked like they would win the match when Wilf Zaha scored a superb goal. Yet, it would be the same old story for Palace, as Josh King tapped in a minute before the end to deny Roy Hodgson’s side a priceless win.

Forwards

Danny Welbeck – Danny Welbeck turned in a man of the match display as Arsenal edged past Southampton at the Emirates. After going a goal down to a Shane Long strike, Welbeck flicked on to Aubameyang who levelled. The England forward would then put the Gunners in front when his drive deflected past Alex McCarthy into the net. Charlie Austin looked to have nicked a point for the Saints when he tapped in, before a late header from Welbeck stole the win. It comes at a good time as Welbeck competes for a place in Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad.

Ayoze Perez – Newcastle secured one of the results of the weekend as they recorded a 2-1 win away at Leicester City on Saturday. They took the lead when Jonjo Shelvey passed into the bottom corner of the net past Kasper Schmeichel. Their second was a moment of brilliance from Ayoze Perez, who lobbed a bouncing ball over Schmeichel from all of twenty yards. Leicester were able to pull a goal back, as Jamie Vardy tapped in from an Okazaki knock down, however it wouldn’t be enough for the Foxes to secure a point.
